Are You looking for Spiritual Meditation?
Recently I discovered more about spiritual meditation. I have always known meditation was good for you but until recently I did not realize how powerful it truly was. I must admit I do struggle to quiet my mind and I still find I may only meditate for a short while..however I notice the benefits even if I practice meditation for only a short time only once a week. I find I am more calm and cope with life much better and I am more aware of my surroundings.
Spiritual Meditation: What Is It?
To meditate is to be in a state where your body and mind are consciously relaxed and focused.
People who practice the art of spiritual meditation report increased awareness, focus, and concentration, as well as a more positive outlook in life. This is certainly the feelings I have experienced with meditation and I must say I was surprised by how well it works.
We usually associate Spiritual Meditation with monks, mystics and other spiritual disciplines. However, you don’t have to be a monk or mystic to enjoy the benefits. And you don’t even have to be in a special place to practice it. You could even try it in your living room!
Spiritual Meditation: Principles
Although there are many different approaches to spiritual meditation, the fundamental principles remain the same. The most important principle is to remove obstructive, negative, and wandering thoughts and fantasies, and calm the mind with a deep sense of focus. This often is referred to focusing on your own breath. This clears the mind of debris and prepares it for a higher quality of activity.
The negative thoughts that we have such as the noisy neighbors, bossy work colleagues, the parking ticket you received, spam etc are all contributing to polluting your mind and shutting them out allows for you to cleanse your mind so that it may focus on deeper, more meaningful thoughts.
Spiritual Meditation: Decreasing Sensory Input
When practicing spiritual meditation you may also shut out all sensory input – such as sight, sounds and touch, and try to detach from the commotion around you. It may seem deafening at first, as we are all too accustomed to constantly hearing and seeing things, but as you continue this exercise you will find yourself becoming more aware of everything around you.
Spiritual Meditation: Position
When practicing spiritual meditation you need to be in a comfortable position conducive to concentration. This may be while sitting cross-legged, standing, lying down, and even walking. If the position allows you to relax and focus, then that will be a good starting point. While sitting or standing, the back should be straight, but not tense or tight. In other positions, be sure not to slouch.
Spiritual Meditation: Clothing
When meditating you should where loose, comfortable clothes….since tight fitting clothes have a tendency to make you feel tense.
Spiritual Meditation: Where to Meditate?
The place you perform spiritual meditation should have a soothing atmosphere. It may be in your living room, or bedroom, or any place that you feel comfortable in. A exercise or yoga mat is also a good idea as you progress in your meditation and try some of the more challenging positions for meditation.
Silence helps most people relax and meditate, so you may want a quiet, isolated area far from the ringing of the phone or the noise of the washing machine. Pleasing scents also help such as aromatic candles.
Spiritual Meditation: Sounds
The monks you see on TV make sounds that is actually preforming their mantra.television making those monotonous sounds are actually performing their mantra. This, is a short creed, a simple sound which holds a mystic value. For example a sound you may hear is OMM. Focusing on repeated actions such as breathing, and humming help you to enter a higher state of consciousness.
Spiritual Meditation: Focus
The principle for spiritual meditation is focus. You could try focusing on a certain object, your breath or a thought, or even, while keeping your eyes open, focus on a single image.
Spiritual Meditation: Conclusions
In conclusion, spiritual meditation is a great technique that you can practice everyday, be it for 1 minute, 5 minutes or 30 minutes. Also meditation is a risk-free practice and its benefits are well worth the commitment to practicing it daily
Studies have shown that meditation does bring about beneficial physiologic effects to the body. And there has been a growing support in the medical community for meditation benefits. So in the near future, maybe spiritual meditation will become known and might become science itself!
