Have copies of any important documents with you when you travel. Copies of important papers like your passport, insurance forms, and any other key documentation should travel well-separated from your originals. Also, have someone you know keep a set of copies, too. This helps if all copies in your possession are lost.
Create a list of the items you need to pack. Between one week and three months before you leave for a trip, sit down and write down every item you are going to take with you. Even if you actually pack the stuff at the last moment, you can still be organized and avoid packing unnecessary stuff.
Check the expiration dates on your passports. Some countries have very specific rules regarding passports, including when they expire. If your passport expires within a specified time frame, you may not be able to enter the country. Time frames can run anywhere from three months to a year.
No matter what the time is in your home-land, make sure you stay out of bed until 8pm local time. This will help you assimilate to the new time zone much quicker, and help to ward off jet lag. Going to bed too much earlier than normal will just make your jet lag last longer, as your body remains committed to the old time zone. Do your best to adjust to the new time as quickly as you can, so your jet lag will fade and you can enjoy your vacation.
Look for a hotel that offers free parking and stay the night before leaving from a port city, on a cruise. Be sure to ask about parking deals in case they are not published.
Travel with bottled water when traveling outside of the country. The water of foreign countries is often not purified and could cause your to get sick. Always use bottled water when brushing your teeth. Although it may seem inconsequential, you could get sick even from the small amount of water used when you brush your teeth.
If you bring them, you will be able to connect your laptop to the TV in your room. Instead of purchasing pricey hotel films, you can watch Netflix or other streaming online video sources.
Tip the staff at the hotel appropriately when you are staying at a hotel. Tipping the people who assist you during your stay will help to develop a relationship with the staff, and entice them to provide you with optimum service.
You should not take any extra belongings that are worth a considerable amount money. If you decide to bring valuables, you could lose them, or they could even be stolen.
Take extras of anything you absolutely need on your trip, like eyeglasses or contacts. If you happen to loose your contacts, or glasses, then you will at least have your backup pair with you. Make sure you put the spare pair in your stowed luggage, and not in your carry-on bags. This will keep them safer in transit.
Try to avoid exchanging currency when you are in a new country. There are other, easier ways to exchange cash for foreign currency. Before you travel find out if the area you are traveling to has bank ATM machines available. ATMs usually offer better exchange rates, and are more convenient than going to a currency exchange anyway.
If you have a child, keep a color photo of him or her in your wallet in case they get lost. Losing your child can be a scary prospect. It can happen to even the most diligent parents. A simple picture of your child will make a difference, especially if you are going abroad and do not speak the language fluently enough to describe your child and they get lost from you.
