Dog Training Tips That Anyone Can Use

There are many reasons why dogs get trained. Dogs can be trained to hunt or to protect, and they can also be trained to do tricks for enjoyment. Dogs are eager to please their master. Their desire to please makes them ideal pets. No matter what your reason for training your dog, you will find some common sense ideas to make it easy in the article below.

When you want to have success at dog training, understanding what your dog is motivated by is half the battle. You are both learning something about each other and what each of you expects out of each other. Regardless of the reason that you have decided to train your dog, provide him with various training exercises and copious amounts of positive reinforcement. The happier your dog is, the more successful your training with him will be.

Commanding control is the very first step in training your dog. Be friendly with your dog, but also be firm. Do not let your dog walk ahead of you when you go on walks.

Dogs can learn a multi-step behavior by stepwise refinement just like humans can. For example, you can get your dog to bring in your newspaper. The first step is to teach your dog to hold the newspaper. Next, the puppy needs to learn how to find the object on command. You need to teach him then how to pick the object up. Then finally, he should bring it to you. Breaking a task into small steps will make the information your dog has to process much more digestible and consequently, more easily accomplished.

Don’t use doggy treats as your sole positive reinforcement mechanism. Treats are effective for teaching proper behaviors. However, you may not always have a treat with you to congratulate you dog outside of regular training sessions. Verbal praise and physical affection, such as hugs and petting, can be just as effective as treats to reinforce any desired behavior when training your dog.

You should make training fun for both you and your dog. Training sessions need only be 10 to 15 minutes, so the dog reaps the benefits within his attention span. Rewards should be plentiful and varied. Make sure you shower praise on your dog when they do well. The more enjoyable training is for your dog, the more he will look forward to it!

When possible, puppy training is the most effective form of dog training. Much like human children, puppies learn faster than adult dogs. Beginning your dog’s training when he is still young will help him to be a well-behaved dog as he ages.

Make rewards something truly special, by using his favorite treats. This is one time you can use something you would not usually give them, like meat.

Although there are many benefits to using a harness, you will have less control over your dog than if he is wearing a cinch collar. When you use both a collar and a harness, and only tug the collar when you need to, the dog will learn that he or she must behave while they are in the harness, too.

When training a dog, you need everyone who takes care of the dog to treat him the same way. Consistency is key when it comes to training your dog. If one person trains a dog differently, then the dog will be confused about how it should properly behave.

If you cannot be patient, don’t start a training session. Your patience is vital for encouraging the focused attention your dog needs to get the full benefits of training.

Teething is painful, and providing chew toys helps alleviate the pain. Keep items that are potentially more painful out of reach. You need to replace that with a designated chew toy. If your puppy needs to chew because he is teething, try a frozen washcloth.

Have a blast during each training session with your dog. Taking time to play creates a strong bond between the two of you, and your dog will be more likely to respond well to training. Although dog training can be fun, you don’t really want to spend all your time in training mode.

Occasionally, behavior problems can occur suddenly and warrant a visit to a vet to clarify any health issues that may have arisen. Certain health conditions, or even pain, can completely change an animal’s demeanor. It could even be to the point that the dog may become more aggressive and lash out at people. Since we don’t speak their language, this is their way of informing us that something is amiss.

People train dogs for different reasons. Dogs are known for their desire to please, which makes a well-trained one a pleasure to have around. It is hoped that you have found some helpful tips in this article that will aid your efforts to train your pooch.
