Sleep Apnea also affects children. Signs of sleep apnea in kids includes hyperactivity, hostility and breathing through their mouth. These symptoms are quite similar to ADHD, so it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis because treatments for these two disorders are quite different.
Stick to a sleeping schedule. If you suffer from sleep apnea, anything you can do to get your body into the rhythm to sleep is helpful. Once you start going to bed the same hour every night, your body chemistry will get used to this. Then you can fall asleep easier and get more rest each night.
Treating allergies or sinus issues is an issue of the first order. This condition makes sleeping troublesome. The last thing you need is something else causing you difficulty breathing during your sleep. By treating your allergies or sinus problems, you will be more likely to get a full night’s rest and have energy for the day.
If you have other breathing problems, correct or improve them. If you are dealing with sleep apnea, it’s crucial that you immediately treat any breathing problems you may have. For example, if you have seasonal allergies, make sure you take your antihistamine regularly and limit your exposure to allergens. If you feel a cold coming on, treat it promptly so that it doesn’t exacerbate your apnea.
People suffering from sleep apnea are well advised not to sleep on their backs. Lying on your back when you sleep makes it easier for your airways to become blocked. Do what’s necessary to sleep sideways, even if you have to use pillows or other items to force the issue.
Your physician may want you to write in a log or journal about your sleep, in order to check to see if you have sleep apnea. You will record the time you go to sleep and wake up, whether you woke up during the night and how you felt when you woke up each morning. Ask your partner to keep track of your snoring, movements, and whether you stop breathing at night. This can help the doctor determine if you actually have sleep apnea.
Drinking alcohol in the hours right before bedtime can exacerbate sleep apnea. Alcohol can overly relax your throat muscles and make it difficult to breathe causing an apnea episode. This doesn’t mean that you’re going to have to stop completely, you’re just not going to want to drink before sleeping.
If you have sleep apnea and your mouth keeps falling open while you sleep with your CPAP every night, try wearing a chin strap. This little piece of fabric can work wonders to hold your chin that your breathing is not interrupted. Use this device to solve this annoying problem, as leaving it unfixed will make your CPAP therapy ineffective.
Let the airline company know far in advance when you plan on traveling and you have to take your CPAP machine with you. Almost every airline company will make the necessary arrangements to accommodate your needs. If you fly a foreign carrier, be sure to pack a power adapter.
You should be fitted with a mouth guard that works for you. These handy plastic devices are designed to help one breathe during the night and prevent snoring, which is believed to be the root cause of some sleep apnea cases. You may have a jaw that contributes to sleep apnea as well. This may simply be genetic.
Learn how to play a wind instrument. Learn the clarinet, flute, or even the didgeridoo to help relieve your sleep apnea. These instruments help you learn proper air control, and will exercise your airway muscles as well. You can really train your muscles to be strong with a bit of training.
Making the muscles in your throat much stronger is an excellent way to help the alleviate the sleep apnea. Sleep apnea results from breathing obstruction due to your soft tissues in your throat collapsing. Strong muscles are less likely to constrict airways.
Now, don’t you understand how to deal with sleep apnea? Use the tips that work for you and seek medical help as well. Do not try to address your sleep apnea by yourself. When you start getting enough rest you will see your whole life improve.
