Building Your List With Giveaways

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

One of my favorite ways to build a list is by joining and promoting
online giveaways. A giveaway is a time-limited, free membership website
where a group of marketers (known as contributors) submit their “gifts”
so that the members who register can download them.

The key is a member has to join a marketer’s mailing list in order to
download the product they want from them. The member will be directed
to a squeeze page first and then will be able to download the gift.

You can find out about giveaways in a number of different ways. Some
giveaways are promoted via “word of mouth” with a marketer sending a
sign-up link to their mailing lists or posting them on their blog or
Facebook/Twitter.

All you need to participate as a contributor in a giveaway is a
product/gift to submit to the giveaway, an autoresponder and squeeze
and thank you/download pages.

There are a number of different ways to come up with a gift. You can
create a report using information you have gathered and save it as a PDF.
However, your free product does not have to be a report. It could also
be an instructional video, an MP3 interview conducted with a fellow
marketer, a software product or a script/plugin. You can also use
PLR (Private Label Rights) products/content to get your product
created quickly.

The autoresponder is your tool used to collect names and email
addresses during the giveaway. This is how you will build your list.
Everyone who signs up to download your gift will be added to your
autoresponder so you can follow-up with them after the giveaway is
over. I highly recommend you use Aweber as your autoresponder.

The squeeze page is a webpage with your autoresponder opt-in form
placed on it and a marketing message describing what your product
is all about. Most prod

After the member signs up to receive the gift, they are sent to a
download page. This is a webpage where you place the download link
for your product. I also suggest that on this page you place some
“unnanounced bonuses”. These can be free downloads which have
affiliate links that will generate commissions on any backend sales.

Now there could be 20 or more giveaways running at any given time.
You have to identify quality events that will attract large numbers
of contributors and members which will help you build your list a
lot faster.

All giveaways have a “paid upgrade” option. This gives you a more
prominent position for your gift or gifts within the download area
and other benefits, like uploading banner ads, text as or even
products for people to buy.

Make sure you pay attention to who is running the giveaway. This
is the key to whether it would be a good one to join or to pay the
upgrade. Some of the better giveaways are run by Stephanie Mulac,
Guido Nussbaum, Willie Crawford and Rodger Hyatt.

The traffic (i.e. new contributors and members) comes to the giveaway
by the contributors promoting it to their lists and when the giveaway
goes live, members are able to promote too. If you dont have a list,
hit up your contacts on Skype, use Twitter, Facebook, forum signatures
and/or write a blog post about the event.

These are the basics behind giveaways and how to use them to build your
list. If you are reading this before June 11, 2012, you have the opportunity
to apply what you just learned in Willie Crawford’s giveaway! Click Here
