Why Keyword Research Can Improve Your SEO

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

When it comes to online content, understanding why keyword research can improve your SEO is one of the best things you can learn. Search engine patterns are unique in that anyone can search for something in Google, but rarely do they do so in a way that seems natural. This means you need to research exactly what people are typing into search engines and replicate it on your site.

We’ll show you exactly how many people are looking for your keywords, how to track them and which keywords will most benefit your organization in order to be successful.

Problems with Keywords

Keywords are funny things. They are a word or series of words that people type into Google search to find content. How we search has become a pretty unintuitive process, with people using a sloppy short-form to search for ideas. This means instead of someone searching, “how to find scientific information about becoming a giraffe,” we often see this broken down into “how to be a giraffe.” If you miss this distinction, your content may end up archived on the back pages.

This means we need to find ways to research and tailor our keywords to “speak” to Google and to our customers in a way that will create the most opportunities for this content to be found online. Thankfully, Google make this extremely fast and easy. They created a free software system which you can use online to test a keyword. This will give you information on your results before posting your content live. You can also track your current keywords using Google Analytics.

Google Keyword Research

When researching keywords, you want to make sure that enough people are going to use it to find your content without coming into direct competition with another major website. A competition factor of between 4,000 and 20,000 hits should be enough for you to get and maintain a number one Google ranking for that particular keyword or keyphrase. The Empower Network also helps boost your SEO immeasurably if you are looking for an easier fix.

When it comes to keyword research:

  • Test out different expressions and keywords to see which works best for your site

  • Don’t compete with major industries; chances are a one-word change can bring you more traffic

  • Test numbers in words, such as, Top 10 Blog Posts to recreate short-form searches

  • Use Google Analytics to track which keywords were most successful on your site, then repeat

  • Try to keep keywords as natural and short as possible to create an effortless result
