Vital Terms and Concepts to Understand About Email List Marketing

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Since the only legal way to send commercial emails is through permission-based processes, it becomes important to have clarity with the situation. No doubt you have seen very many optin boxes offering their various freebie in exchange for some contact information. After the laws passed outline what is allowable from a legal standpoint, many IM marketers just defaulted to the safest option. However, many have tested all that is possible and found that nobody likes jumping through a lot of hoops just to get on a list. As always, do your due diligence and verify all you read and conduct your own testing.

Of course you know about ezines or email newsletters, but perhaps you are not aware of how powerful they really are. In the beginning, you can leverage the email lists created by others in your niche. The way you can capture that power, and help build your own list, is by buying ad space in newsletters. There are services that facilitate that or you can find relevant ezines in your niche. Then you will purchase ad space for your own special offering. You will not be buying traffic, but what you will be doing is getting your message out to a targeted audience.

If you have Google Gmail, then you have probably seen your wanted emails go to your spam folder. Those emails are not intended to be spam. In fact, you may have signed up for these particular emails. The spam filter software rarely has a 100% rate of success. Whenever this outcome is observed, then this is a false positive. This is because the spam filter was triggered for non-spam email. Quite frankly, this is something that occurs on a regular basis. If you fail to get an email that you were expecting, then be sure to check your spam folder for it. Because false positives happen all of the time, you should not forget to view emails with a spam filter. Also, ask your subscribers to put your address on a white list.

There is one phrase that you will not encounter too many times. But, it is part of the email marketing lexicon and is good to know. The house list is any email list that is built by the marketer or person who created it. This list is generated according to certain permissions, unless the person developing the list is a spammer. But still, that list would be the spammer’s house list. So, the terms still exists. You want to begin and produce your personal house list.

If you are new to email marketing, we recommend you avoid getting paranoid about the false accusation of spamming that can occur with a subscriber. We have no statistics or any kind of data on how prevalent that is in the industry. But it is something we hear about very infrequently, and we feel it is not worth worrying about. Nevertheless, you should go with which ever option makes you feel most comfortable.

One thing you need to realize concerning this discussion about is it can become as effective as you want; it depends on how you scale your promotions.
