Improving Your Direct Mail Response

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

If you do Internet marketing, more than likely the concept of direct mail hasn’t interested you at all. It’s okay if you have not thought of it. Most Internet Marketers have not considered this concept. What you need to realize is that even if your business is primarily on the Internet, there are still things you can do to attract customers and clients off-line. You can do this using direct mail. It really isn’t easy using direct mail for this purpose. On the contrary, it’s not hard at all. It really can be difficult to create a direct marketing campaign that works. To help you make successful direct-mail campaigns, we wrote this article to point out a few essential things.

It is okay to be creative and to break a few rules when you send out direct mail. Direct mail is, after all, a different medium than email. You have a little bit more room to let your creativity show. Just try this out! Creating a strange shape with your flyer is one thing you can do. Instead of using prose, use poetry! You need to be creative when writing, not cheesy at all. You need to realize there is a fine line that you cannot cross. And before you send out anything to the masses, make sure you test everything out. Instead of sending out something formal (like most people do!) you can send out your creativity in the written word. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box.

You’re going to need to be consistent to get results. You probably send out email campaigns that include at least three separate mailings, right? Direct mail works a lot like this. You don’t have to send them one right after the other. One direct mail event per week should be plenty. Keep your campaigns limited to between three and five mailings before you choose a different follow up method. You need people to remember your name before you attempt a new method of reaching out to them.

Avoid making your direct mailings appear as though they’re nothing more than tacky infomercials. Don’t be tempted to try and make your message stand out more by resorting to garish colors and outrageous fonts. Don’t take this path. Keep your mails as professional as possible. Of course you want your mail to attract attention. But you also want to see positive results that make people take action. They aren’t going to take that action if your mail looks like it was sent from a local used car dealership. Work on making things demure and professional instead.

As you can see, creating a direct marketing campaign that is successful is possible. Using direct mail, you can access new prospective clients, as well as build your clientele list – ignore those that say differently. A great way to increase your overall profits as well. Most Internet Marketers go with their gut instinct and only market to the online audience. You can open up to audiences that you never would have found by branching out in this manner. Now that you know what to do, may you have many successful direct mail campaigns. Good luck!

One thing you need to realize concerning this discussion about make money online is it can become as effective as you want; it depends on how you scale your promotions.
