Patience
What comes to mind when someone says to you “just be patient” or “have patience?”
I use to hate to hear these words. What…. are you kidding me. Me ….uh no way. Well I work on this daily, and starting to get better in having patience.
What is Patience
There are several definitions.
Dictonary.com says; bearing provocation, annoyance, misfortune, delay, hardship, pain, etc., with fortitude and calm and without complaint, anger, or the like; an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay; quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care.
The bibles definination is: endurance, hopeful and forbearance.
Quotes on Patience
“He that can have patience can have what he will.” (Benjamin Franklin)
“Patience and wisdom walk hand in hand, like two one-armed lovers.” (Jarod Kintz)
“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” (Aristotle)
Patience Bible Verses
Hebrews 6:12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. (NIV)
Proverbs 14:29 Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly. (NIV)
Proverbs 19:11 A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to ones’ glory to overlook an offense. (NIV)
One thing that I am beginning to learn on how to have patience is, to start with your thinking.
Everyday something is done or said that makes you lose your patience. It can be your kids, your spouse, a peer, your boss, or even the dip that cuts you off on your way to work.
So you yell, scream, cuss, or flip someone off.
Who has done that? I bet in one form or another you have. You can’t help it.
Did it make you feel better? For the moment it did, but then when I really got to thinking about the situation I realized how childish I acted.
Now, we just don’t snap our fingers and bam….lose our patience. It typically builds up.
This actually happened to me.
One day I got up late. Great, I’m going to be late for work. I’m running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Head out the door to take my daughter to the baby sitter surprisingly get to the sitter with no problems…whew just might make it by the skin of my chin. …..
after I drop off my daughter….what… where is my purse. Damn I left it at home. I knew I couldn’t take a chance driving across town on the interstate without it.
So……back home I go. Now I’m really late. Of course I get stopped by every light on the way to my house and to the interstate. By the time I got to work I was 30 minutes late, and just in a bad mood. What good did that do me; all I did was raise my blood pressure.
The bottom line… I lost my patience.
Would have I been late… maybe.
If I would have just took a deep breath, moved at a slightly faster pace. I probably wouldn’t have forgotten my purse, and maybe just maybe only have been a few minutes late if at all.
My point being is having the right mind set.
Just take a deep breath, say to yourself, slowdown; it’s not worth getting your blood pressure up, or for some people who even can get nauseous.
So my next few blogs will be on patience and some things we can go to achieve it.
Blessings, Carla
