July 28, 1995 off to to the hospital. My new birthday was to be that day. My husband and daughter took off to be there at 800am for registration. Thirteen months earlier when I went on dialysis, I knew that a kidney transplant would be in my future. I read up on all the things to expect. The hardest think for me was going under the anesthetic for such a long period of time. The surgery could take up to 8 hours. I did not want to leave my husband a widower or my 5 1/2 years old daughter without her mommy. I am a Christian and I always knew that God would watch over me. The fear was there natheless. That summer morning heading to the hospital I had such a peace about me. I remember when we were driving to the hospital I kept saying to myself “I can’t believe how calm I am”, the panic of this very real kidney transplant happening never materialized. “Oh wait till I get to the hospital”. Nothing. After registration off to the room I went. Still having that peace, thinking “it will come when I get to the room”. Once I got to the room the nurse had me change into those “beautiful” gowns, not…..She asked the normal questions and took my vitals. Had to have an enema , YUCK. I guess that is with any major surgery. The surgery was scheduled for 1pm. I drained my peritoneal fluid, and remember saying “boy glad I won’t have to do this again”. Still at peace, wow this is not like me. By this time it was 10am. I’m thinking, 3 more hours. Not to long after that they came in and said okay we are ready to take you in. At that moment I was………still at peace. What the heck was happening that I am so calm. I gave my beautiful daughter a hug and kiss and told her I see her when I was done. They would not let her got with me to the, what I called the holding room. My husband was able to go on through. We kissed each other and then they took me to the operating room. Right before I drifted off to sleep I was still at Peace. What I believe is if what to be is to be then things will work out. You see I was to receive this Kidney Transplant and God was going to bless me with a working kidney again…..Stay tuned for the rest of the story. Leave any questions or comments.
