Kick the tobacco habit. Smoking can cause unsightly stains on your pearly whites and is potentially disastrous to your health. Smokers tend to have a yellowish tint to their teeth, from all the tar and nicotine contained in cigarettes. If you smoke, it can be really hard to keep your teeth as white as a non-smokers. Quitting smoking is very hard, but every cigarette you avoid will lessen the effects on your teeth.
Don’t smoke cigars or cigarettes if you can help it. The habit has long been shown to cause teeth to discolor. Try to quit smoking to avoid and prevent your teeth from turning yellow. If you find there is no way you can quit smoking on your own, try talking to your doctor who can recommend medications for smoking cessation. It’s a matter of having the right advice and support.
Keep in mind that whitening products are only effective on your natural teeth before you launch into a full-blown whitening regimen. If you have dental work such as veneers, implants, crowns or fillings in the front of your mouth, those will remain the shade that they are. Using teeth whiteners might cause dental work, such as crowns, to stand out against your natural white teeth.
Consider purchasing an electric toothbrush as a way to brighten up your smile. Electric brushes are better at buffing away stains caused by tobacco, wine and other dark beverages. They can also remove the yellow plaque on tooth enamel.
