The first thing your visitors notice will be the design of your website. Create a design that leaves a good first impression, or people will tend to leave your website quickly. If you make use of the following tips, you should minimize the chances of a poor first impression.

If you’re aiming to host videos within your website, you should check to see if your web host will allow it. Many hosts do not allow for video hosting on the servers they provide. Do not waste time by building videos to be be hosted on a site that does not allow the space you need for FLV or similar files.

Search Box

Your website should have a favicon. These little images show up next to the link to your website if your visitors choose to bookmark it. If your favicon is distinctive and memorable, the link to your site will stand out on visitors’ bookmark lists. You should design the favicon so that it is logical for your theme and logo.

Put the search box up high on the page and give it no fewer than 27 characters. Make sure the button that engages the search says “search” and not “submit” or “go”. Taking these steps ensures that visitors can find and use the search box easily so that they can find whatever they are seeking.

It is important to remember to test your website’s design on various web browsers. Every browser interprets sites in their own way, and sometimes that can lead to drastic differences in the way a site appears to a user, affecting not only visual elements, but functional elements as well. Using available resources, determine which browsers are the most popular among your target demographic. Make sure your website works in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and the major mobile browsers.

You should have a visible tagline included on not only every webpage that is in the domain, but also the sub-domains. These should be in large, bold text and the first thing that the viewer will see when they follow any links. A tagline is also useful because it offers quick information about the overall purpose of your site. Within seconds, a visitor can judge whether or not the site is relevant.

Remember, designing your site needs not to cost a lot of money. You can find cheap or free website design tools that do the same things as expensive website design software. For example, you can use free open-source software instead of paid software. These open source solutions are the key to saving money in your budget.

The design of the website is one of the first things a visitor will notice, and it can have a big influence on how much time they spend at a site. You have to deliver the best first impression.
