Justin Bieber proved Friday that he isn’t among the tens of millions who have read The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank since it was first published in 1947.
Frank, her parents, her sister and four other Jews hid from the Nazis from June 1942 until August 1944 in the attic of a home in Amsterdam. During that time, she wrote her diary which chronicles her life in hiding.
If Bieber was aware of her inspiring story, he would not have set off a vicious social media cycle of condemnation for an arrogant comment he wrote in the guest book of the Anne Frank House Friday.
The House is the building where Frank went into hiding. It’s been a museum since 1960 and is visited by one million people every year.
“Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber,” Bieber wrote.
Fans of Bieber call themselves “Beliebers.”
The museum posted the comment on its Facebook page and unleashed a wave of shock, fury and disbelief.
One person wrote: “She would’ve been a WHAT? That little idiot is way too full of himself. She’s an important historical figure so show some respect.”
“I’m shocked!” read another post. “If Justin Bieber really did write that then that is just completely ignorant and disrespectful. You would have thought a trip to the Anne Frank Huis – a place with so much history and emotion would have taken his ego down a peg or two!”
Another visitor to the museum’s Facebook page said: “In 2 years, he’ll be a punchline; in 10 years a “Oh yeah…I remember him” In 20 years, he will be forgotten. In 200 years, people will still be admiring Anne Frank’s courage and spirit.”
