10 Tips to Grow Your Email List.

The money is in the list, right? Well, not exactly.

Email lists are only profitable if they are expanding and recruiting more subscribers regularly.

Email marketing can be a goldmine for online marketers. It gives them the opportunity to build trust and loyalty with thousands of subscribers, a model thatgenerates massive profits. Customer trust forms the foundation of successful businesses for without it, sales are nonexistent and growth is impossible.

Sadly, email list growth rates are lower than they should be, mainly because expansion can be challenging even for seasoned marketers. Not only must you fend with growing your list, but you also must deal with inactive subscribers, unsubscribes, spam triggers, and address changes.

Thankfully, small adjustments can result in large rewards, and it’s my goal to help you learn and apply these changes so you can experience the wealth and success of a thriving email list.

Here are 10 tips to building and growing a successful email list:

1. Simplicity

What is surrounding your optin? Is your page cluttered? Distracting?

Your optins should be easy to find and stand out, and they should not be surrounded by distracting elements. Simple is better than confusing and cluttered.

The below is a great example of a high-converting optin.

2. Make them an offer they can’t refuse!

Your freebie is the main star of the show. Make it compelling!

Your potential subscriber does not really care about you or your website the first time they see your optin. They are only concerned with the value you are giving them.

Spend time brainstorming your offer. This step is crucial and easy to mess up. Do some target market research and seek to deeply understand your future subscribers’ needs.

Your offer should:

Target your audience – Who are they? Where do they hang out? What are their desires? UNDERSTAND your target audience.

Provide value – Make your freebie outstanding. Don’t just throw something together for the sake of getting an optin. Internet users are savvy; they know a good product from a gimmick. If you offer a sub-par gift, you may get the conversion, but once your new subscribers receive your free gift, if it is unsatisfactory, many will unsubscribe immediately.

Offer a solution – What are your subscribers’ problems? How can you help to solve them? Come up with a creative solution to an industry problem and you will hit the jackpot!

Be relevant – If your audience is interested in SEO principles, don’t give them an ebook on creating viral videos. This scenario will only succeed if you have a blog that covers MANY internet marketing topics. Even then, monitor the most popular topics and take these posts as cues as to what your audience is looking for.

Even though the below optin hails from an internet marketing blog, it speaks directly to its audience’s most pressing needs.

3. Benefits and Proof

What can your subscriber expect after joining your email list? How often will you email them?

Be honest and transparent and don’t use hype. Tell them what they are signing up for. When they receive what you outlined, you will have started to build that strong foundation of trust.

Notice how in my optin I tell subscribers exactly what to expect and when they will get it.

If you have testimonials or subscriber reviews, include them without cluttering up the optin. If you already have a substantial email list, don’t hesitate to let your potential subscribers know that.

4. Privacy

You are asking your subscribers to offer their email address, and to many people this is a private matter. In addition, subscribers may expect a barrage of spam emails from marketers who will intentionally sell or give away their email address.

You must address their concerns and include privacy text directly under the optin. See example:

5. Recruit via your email messages

There are other ways to recruit subscribers outside of your website. Include “share” links within your newsletters and encourage people to spread the word. If your subscribers love your content, they will be happy to share it.

6. Email and forum signatures

Add your landing page to any properties you frequent on the web. If you are a member of a forum or you use email regularly for communication, don’t forget that everywhere you connect with people you have an avenue to acquire more subscribers.

7. Printed Materials

Do you participate in direct mail campaigns, print flyers, or advertisements? Are you the owner of a local brick and mortar store?

Email optins are not just for online visitors. Encourage offline customers to visit your website or landing page and tell them what they can expect to receive as an incentive.

8. Thank you page

Your thank you page represents another opportunity to encourage sharing. Add social buttons and reiterate the benefit of joining your list. Also, remind your subscribers they must confirm their subscription to receive future emails.

9. Maximize your contact page

Allow your website visitors to opt in to your list directly from your contact form. If they are filling out your form, they are interested in what you offer. Clicking a small box is easy for potential subscribers and they already feel trust, so this model is worth implementing to see if it increases your subscriber count.

10. Review your Unsubscribe Rates

If you are not actively watching your analytics, you may lose more subscribers than what is customary. Watch for any spikes in unsubscribe rates. This can signal to you the type of content your list does not appreciate.

There are many ways to grow your email list but the above ten represent a great place to start.
