Intel Mistake – A Lesson Intel Learned the Hard Way

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

The PC is dying.

For the most part, when it comes to computers, the personal computer, with its bulky monitor and tower, is going the way of the dinosaur. Computers are doing more and more. Convertible brands can be a laptop and a tablet. Microsoft 8 has even been developed for the purposes of being used on these new tablet touch screen computers. With the focus going to portability and most consumers using a laptop, any focus on PC development might put a company that wants to stay ahead of the tech game far behind instead.

Intel mistake on redesigning the PC.

So why would Intel decide to redesign the PC?

Intel has always been the world’s biggest chip producer. This past month, they reported that their profits sank by 27%. Unfortunately, it was a misjudgment on the companies part that caused their sales to sink. “Once we imagined a world in which individual users would have both a PC and a tablet as personal devices,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. “[Now] we hypothesize that buyers will not replace secondary PCs in the household, instead allowing them to age out and shifting consumption to a tablet.”

Intel, and many other companies, made the mistake of assuming that computer buyers would continue to update their old electronics, despite the fact that the economy is in a slump and they probably won’t purchase duplicate items. The laptop computer, and even the tablet, can be used as an entire substitution for a PC. These items are no longer back-ups. Instead, they are the primary item that people work with.

For some, using the tablet as a computer is as easy as installing a virtual keyboard and some apps. Many companies are giving their employees laptop computers instead of desktop computers. This allows the employees to take work home and have a backup in an emergency situation. Most larger companies have transitioned out PC models and instead handed their employees laptops with workplace docking stations. This way, they save on money as well as business efficiency.

At a time like this, why focus on personal computers? Intel mistake by making a miscalculation by assuming consumers would be slower to replace their standard electronics with portables ones. It’s not an uncommon mistake to make. Apple has seen profits drop as well, and this could be due to an unnecessary iMac upgrade made this past November that is not selling as well as anticipated.

By embracing the portable age, some companies, like Dell and Microsoft, have managed to pull forward. Consumers are now all about virtual reality and portability. With cloud storage, the days of needing a giant hard drive are over. With laptop computers, employees can work from anywhere and be more productive. The new standard in computer technology isn’t about sleek desktop models. Instead, it’s about portability, size and convenience. Companies that focus on those areas are sure to pull ahead of the competition.
