How Many Blogs Do I Need?

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Many businesses choose to have a blog in order to gain SEO hits, build a relationship with consumers and offer information about their business. However, some businesses may choose to have more than one blog in order to maximize their exposure and create a larger audience.

So how do you know if you need more than one blog and what should you do if you decide to go with multiple blogs?

First, take a look at your time constraints. In order to remain at the top of the blogging food chain, your blogs should have regular posts at least 3 times per week, but ideally more (one blog per day). If you are struggling to keep up with one blog on a weekly basis, then it is impractical to try to add on additional blogs you won’t be able to keep up with.

Do multiple blogs make sense for your business? If you are an author, with only one aspect to your business, then chances are multiple blogs will just cause confusion. However, if you are an editing service that offers proofreading, cover design and advertising, it may be a good idea to break those categories down into three separate blogs so all the information stays together.

Are you just planning on copying and pasting the same information into separate blogs? If so, stop right there. In the new way search algorithms work, quantity no longer equals quantity. Duplicate content will be viewed as spam and might even move your page down in rank.

Do you have enough information to handle multiple blogs? If you work in the business world, then there is a large range of topic to choose from. If you’re trying to advertise a moving company based out of Toledo, Ohio, the choices of topics are far more limited and you may soon find yourself running out of ideas. A blog is only as good as the content it holds. If you’re rewriting the same article time and time again, don’t expect anyone to read it.

Are you considering different blog mediums? Not all blogs have to have articles. Some blogs are simply video focused while some are photography focused. If you work in a business where it makes sense to include both photos and videos, you can either embed them in your primary blog, or you can create separate blogs just for them.

If you’re thinking about starting multiple blogs, the most important thing to consider is the amount of time you will need to dedicate to working on them and the information that will go in them.

If you are working with limited subject matter and very little spare time, it is probably best to keep it to one blog and update regularly. However, if you have a multifaceted business with many different aspects, it may be time to think about expanding. Before undertaking a new blog, it is important to remember that they can require just as much maintenance as a regular website. A blog isn’t just about getting SEO hits; it’s about providing information to your readers that will make them keep coming back to your site.
