It is important to involve the entire family when it comes to training your puppy or dog. Your dog may see one family member as the one in charge, but other family members need to be consistent in their expectations of the dog’s behavior also.
Keep dog training techniques positive and upbeat. Remain motivated, even when training gets tough. Rewarding your dog when he performs well is an integral part of training. If you punish and use negative techniques to train your dog, you will scare him and he won’t care to make you happy.
Prepare your dog in having veterinary examinations. Rub your dog as the vet would do, passing your hands on his body, and when he responds like you want him to, praise him. You also need to get him ready to have his paws held and looked at, as well as his teeth examined. Consider getting friends to help you out.
Vary the treats you use as rewards for your dog during training sessions. Don’t use your dog’s everyday treats for training. You want to place special emphasis on their improvement in training.
Buy chew toys so that your puppy can deal with painful teething. Then, give it something that it is allowed to chew on if it likes. To help your dog cope with painful teething, give him a wet washcloth that has been frozen.
Don’t start a training session if you don’t think you’ll be calm and patient throughout. You will need to be patient with your dog, or they will become impatient and their attention will be focused elsewhere.
Refrain from playing tug-of-war with your puppy while you in the process of training him. In addition to tug-of-war, games that involve wresting something away from your puppy or chasing each other in any respect, can entice the animal to bite or nip at your hands. Don’t let them get in the habit of doing so. When they are more well-trained, you can add these kinds of games into the mix.
If you want to potty-train your dog, do not use wee-wee pads. Wee-wee pads are prone to leaks, which make your dog think that it is okay to eliminate in that area due to the smell. They also make your dog think it’s okay to use anything with a similar shape as a bathroom. Instead, drill it into your dog’s head that they should be using their bathroom outside.
Prior to training your puppy, make a bond with your dog by teaching him what his name is. Call his name every time you do something or want him to do something. Teach him that he needs to run to you when his name is called. These are the first few commands your new puppy needs to learn. Spending lots of time will create a strong bond with your puppy, and will lead to unbreakable trust. This will make him easier to train later.
You won’t get anywhere in your dog training routine if your dog feels unsafe. If dogs feel afraid, unprotected or unsafe in anyway, they will start to lash out or show other types of poor, defensive behavior. To prevent any aggressive behaviors, ensure you dog is in surroundings and situations where he feels safe.
Ensure that your dog knows the rules to follow, and be consistent; this will teach it right from wrong. Everyone who lives with your dog will have to undertake the same behavior for him to learn from your training. This will undo all your training!
