Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

A website is one of the most essential things that a running business should have.  A study released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics concluded that almost all Australian website has announced a 10% minimum on the increase of sales over a business.  So there is actually no need to further discuss the pros of finally getting a custom website design.

One of the most important things you need to decide when completing an online project is in which way you are going to.  You need to choose whether you are going with a default website template or you would rather go for a custom website design.  The next thing you will read in this article is the pros and cons and the misconceptions when it comes to choosing between default website templates and custom website design.

Website Templates against Custom Website Design

Website templates are perfect for small businesses whose are just looking for a really basic online presence.  In most cases, the expenses are much cheaper as compared to a custom website design.  Listed below are some of the pros and cons when using a website template.

Cost.  If you just need a basic web presence, a website template will typically fit your tight budget.  Take note however that if you are planning to have a growth for your website and online presence, it will be quite pricey to change from your previous web design template.  Custom website designs are easier to change should you want to make a few tweaks on your business.

Timeframe.  Despite most companies claiming that website templates are easier to set up, the fact is the timeframe for setting up custom website design and website templates are actually the same.  A lot of time will be spent on soaking your website template project to the brand of your business.

Branding.  Your branding may not be as good as when you have chosen to go with a custom website design.

Security.  Website templates are usually vulnerable to hacking and penetration.  If you want security to be at its finest, choose a custom website design.

Support.  Keep in mind that when you are purchasing a website template, you are actually buying a product.  However, if you are purchasing a custom website, you are actually buying a service.

Choosing Custom Website Design over Website Templates

Individuality.  A custom website makes your business have a unique online presence which helps a lot in making your business stand out.

Architecture.  The architecture of your website will be perfect for your business as it was intentionally built according to your specifications.  Aside from this, it does exactly what you want it to do.

Scalability.  Your website can help you grow your company with less hassle on your part.

Search Engine Optimization.  A custom website definitely produces better results when it comes to how search engines perceive your website.  In addition to this, your website is tailored to the products and services you offer.

Whether you choose a custom website or a plain website template, the most important thing is still the planning and promoting stages.  You have to carefully rethink your goals and go for the best option that will benefit your company.
