There’s no place like it on earth, For five years I fished salmon out of Sitka Alaska. Some of my fondest memories, and most memorable characters in my life, dwell in Sitka Alaska.
A Small Drinking Town With A Fishing Problem,
This is the slogan of the town, , like much of the state, Sitka Alaska s residents mainly consist of Commercial Fishermen, the woman who put up with them, (God Bless Them). And the locals who sustain the fishermen s voracious appetite for livin’ on the edge.
The Location of Sitka Alaska
Sitka sits right on the Sitka sound, in the southeast archipelago, on the island of Baranoff. Its a wonder see from the sky, as flying in.
“Breath Taking”
Sitka Alaska sits on the Sitka sound, which then connects to the Gulf of Alaska, ( Next to the Bering Sea, I’ve seen no body of water equal its power).
I Fished the Gulf of Alaska for Five years, and love it for ever.
Boats Everywhere
Everyone in the town of Sitka owns a boat, a majority are fisherman. Sitka Alaska has the largest small boat fishing fleet in the entire state. And thats saying alot, Fishing boats are EVERY WHERE. I mean every where, fishing is the life blood of Alaska. Especially Sitka. That and tourism, on a givin day you can expect to see from 10,000 – 30,000 cruise ship passengers in the town of Sitka Alaska. Its Crazy, it sky rockets the towns population from, 10,000 too 40,000. Talk about jam packed, Locals either hate em’ or love em’. I never minded them, I figured it was good for local economy.
At one point when I lived in Sitka Alaska, I actually lived in a cabin with no power or running water. It was one of the best six months of my life. I appreciated the simple things in life, and took nothing for granted. It was a very humbling moment in my life, a time when I literally worked to survive, getting water, chopping wood, building fires, catching food to eat. Living off the land, I loved every second of it. Another reason I love Sitka Alaska.

Now that your a little more familiar with the town of Sitka Alaska, I’m going to tell you what it means to me, and some of my experiences.
Some Of My Fondest Memories
Like I said I fished salmon out of Sitka Alaska for five years, it was a blast.It was more of a lifestyle then a occupation. Fishing out of Sitka , in the summer, is nothing like the power driven fury of fishing the Bering Sea in winter, and the spending time on the edge of the world in the town of Dutch Harbor.
This was in my younger days, my spent in Sitka Alaska
Younger in my ways, more then my age, so a lot more wild is what I’m getting at. As I said before it’s more of a lifestyle fishing out of Sitka Alaska is more of a lifestyle. Fishing in general really is. But especially out of Sitka in the summer. During the summer you can count on probably six thousand or so extra salmon fisherman, long liners and processors in town, who all seem to go on the town at the same time, (Only a few bars in Sitka, but everyone seems to cram into them all at once). Not to mention the cruise shippers.

I highly recommend you see the great state of Alaska, and if you do, you’ve gotta see Sitka for yourself. Whether you stay for a few days, or a few months, whether your working, or there for recreation. You will fall in love with the town of Sitka. It really is a amazing place, one of the best places on earth.
