Sermon notes of Ronald

Exodus 25:17-22 The Mercy Seat

You can make a lesson out of all the items in the mercy seat. How they were made, why they were made, purpose, etc.

Purpose: Learn about mercy seat, Function of the mercy seat under the Mosaic law, and Christians have a mercy seat today.

What it was: A covering over the ark of the covenant. (Exodus 25:21)

Heb. 9:4 Inside golden jar of manna. Aaron’s rod that once grew leaves, stone tablets of the old agreement.

Propitiation: the Greek translation of the Old Testament called Septuigent.

Where it was: In the Most Holy Place. Exodus 26:33-34

Could only go in one time a year on the day of the attonement. You can read all about that day in Lev. 116:2, 29. 7th day, 10th month

God also spoke to Moses at Num. 7:89, and Exodus 40:17-20

How it was constructed was listed at: Exodus 25:17-21; 31:1-7

Cherubim was guarding and protecting. The reason their wings covered was to cover God’s presence.

Ch. 31: He wasn’t supposed to build them, the artisans do. Verse 3-6, He put wisdom in their hearts, knowledge so they need to know and so they could construct everything God wanted them to do it.

What was it’s function?

We’ll see the exact same function from ours to the Old Testament.

God met with them there (Ex. 25:22)

Moses was in the tabernacle.

God instructed from there. (Ex. 25:22)

God ‘Appeared” in a cloud there. (Lev. 16:2)

He’s not going to be able to see it, but he will appear there. No structure of man can hold God.

Why high priest could only go in once a year.

God granted mercy and propitiation there. (Lev. 16)

1. Attonement for himself – bull

2. Attonement for the sins – goat,

There were goats for them, and no goats for the children.  The goats took lots till there was one lucky to step up, because the rest went for himself.

Our mercy seat is Jesus Christ.

God meets with us through Jesus (John 14:6; Heb. 10:19-21)

Bold ness to enter holiness

Literal blood would sprinkle on mercy seat. Making atonement for the sins of the people. Jesus made atonement that sprinkled in our hearts.

What does that do? Forgive us of our sins.

Why in verse 19 we can enter the holiness with boldness. Doesn’t mean that we still need to understand that God is our creator. Did the high priest go into the holiness, just hoping we did everything right as God commanded. Jesus; mercy seat is so much better.

2. God appears to us through Jesus (John 14:8) Phillip, Lord show us the Father? Did they still not know Him? If we have seen Jesus, we have seen the Father.

3. God speaks to us through Jesus. Heb. 1:2

4. God provides mercy and propitiation through Jesus. (Rom. 3:24-26) Propitiation comes from the same word as mercy seat. Which means or associated with the way sins are forgiven.

There is a difference between mercy seat. God doesn’t remember them any more. Forgiven not just atoned like it was in the Old Testament in Israel with the high priest.

Jesus is the better high priest, better sacrifice, and made perfect for us. His mission was complete.
