The 5 Levels of Leadership: Level 2<\/h2>\n

~How To Be a Good Leader<\/a>~<\/h2>\n

John C. Maxwell <\/a>has been lecturing on the subject of leadership for over 30 years.\u00a0 His latest book, The 5 Levels of Leadership<\/em><\/a>, combines everything that he has learned and taught about the levels of leadership.<\/p>\n

2nd Level of Leadership: Permission<\/h2>\n

In the Permission level of leadership, people like you and give you permission to lead them.\u00a0 This level of leadership is based on relationships.\u00a0 People are following you, because they want to.\u00a0 Unlike level one, there is increased energy and commitment.\u00a0 People will give you extra effort.\u00a0 A synergy develops and people start working together.\u00a0 This leads to increased success.<\/p>\n

So, how exactly do you get to level 2?<\/h2>\n

Developing Leadership Skills<\/a><\/h3>\n

In the 70s, Maxwell heard Zig Ziglar speak for the first time, and he said something that has always stuck with him.\u00a0 \u201cIf you help other people get what they want, they\u2019ll help you get what you want.\u201d\u00a0 Leading is all about others.\u00a0 Find where the leaders are.\u00a0 Find out what their dreams and passions are \u2014 what motivates them.\u00a0 Connect with them on their level, and bring them to the level where they want to be.\u00a0\u00a0 The second level of leadership is all about relating, connecting, and putting others first.<\/p>\n

Another important aspect of the Permission level is encouragement.\u00a0 You achieve the position of a level 2 leader by encouraging others.\u00a0 Maxwell tells a story of having dinner with Truett Cathy of the Chick-fil-A company.<\/p>\n

Cathy asked Maxwell, \u201cHow can you tell when people need encouragement?\u201d<\/p>\n

Maxwell replied, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cathy responded, \u201cIf they are breathing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eureka!<\/p>\n

No matter who we are and what level we are on, we all need encouragement.\u00a0 Level 2 is the level when you will be able to do this.\u00a0 You will be able to \u201cbreathe life into the spirit of people.\u201d\u00a0 You encourage them to grow and be better.<\/p>\n

Advice for Level 2<\/h2>\n

Using the Permission Level to Learn How To Be A Good Leader<\/a><\/h3>\n

Relationships make leadership\u00a0great, but they don\u2019t make leadership effective.\u00a0 Just because you are working with people you like and who like you, it doesn\u2019t mean you are good at what you do.\u00a0 Liking people\u00a0is not enough.\u00a0 Just like level 2,\u00a0level 3 is a good level\u00a0to be on; but not good to stay on.<\/p>\n

Homework<\/h3>\n

To prepare yourself for the transition to level 3, do these two things everyday for the next month.<\/p>\n

1-Every morning ask yourself, \u201cWho can I add value to and how can I do it?\u201d<\/p>\n

2-At the end of the day ask yourself, \u201cWho did I add value to and how did I do it?\u201d<\/p>\n

If you can do this successfully everyday, you will have connected with someone and made a difference.\u00a0 You will be well on your way to the third level of leadership.<\/p>\n
