{"id":327,"date":"2014-05-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-14T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/empowernetwork.com\/turner\/how-i-handle-fear-so-i-can-achieve-my-goals\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T20:20:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T20:20:31","slug":"how-i-handle-fear-so-i-can-achieve-my-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/empowernetwork.com\/turner\/how-i-handle-fear-so-i-can-achieve-my-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"How I Handle Fear So I Can Achieve My Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having fear is normal. \u00a0Not taking action in spite of fear however, is what keeps people stuck in the rut they are in for a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>* Lifestye dreams not gone after.<\/p>\n<p>* Goals not achieved.<\/p>\n<p>* Dream jobs not pursued.<\/p>\n<p>* Relationships not pursued.<\/p>\n<p>* Things not tried (but secretly you wish you would have)<\/p>\n<p>* You name it. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div>When you allow fear to overcome your deepest desires to do something, that&#8217;s a form of imprisonment that you put yourself in. \u00a0That&#8217;s not conducive to living your life full out, nor what you deserve.<\/div>\n<h2>FEAR: \u00a0False Evidence Appearing Real<\/h2>\n<p>The things we as humans allow our mind to believe about what is true and what is just a story we are telling ourselves, is astonishing. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But because we have been programmed since birth to basically accept what we fear as being a real threat to our well being, our brain recalls events, conversations, hurtful comments, being made fun of, teachers and parents that didn&#8217;t offer positive feedback, no education on self-worth, etc., these fears can seem very real to us.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, when we set out to do something great&#8230; to reach for a breakthrough&#8230; to start a new thing&#8230;our past comes up to bite us in the butt and we self sabotage our success. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Heck, for that matter, we self-sabotage our attempt!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Beware: \u00a0That is just our old non-serving, non-believing <a href=\"https:\/\/empowernetwork.com\/blog\/category\/mindset\/\">mindset<\/a> that&#8217;s trying to protect us. \u00a0In actuality, it&#8217;s hurting us and keeping us from achieving our dreams. \u00a0Don&#8217;t stand for it!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The things we worry about when allowing fear to hold us back, are things we imagine in our minds which are negative with bad outcomes and they haven&#8217;t even happened!<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, the film we play in our heads about the &#8220;what if&#8217;s&#8221; usually never happen anyway! \u00a0It&#8217;s all fabricated! \u00a0Our worst nightmares never come true! \u00a0<\/p>\n<div>So even when you DO do the thing that you feared, take note that none of those horrible things you imagined would happen, didn&#8217;t. \u00a0You survived and are probably pretty proud of yourself!<\/div>\n<h2>How I Personally Handle Fear<\/h2>\n<p><span>There have been many times in my life that I was fearful to do something I really wanted to do&#8230; and followed through to do it anyway because there was a goal, an accomplishment, a dream, an opportunity for learning, experiencing and growth on the other side of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As far back as I can remember, I&#8217;ve taken action in spite of fear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>I remember&#8230;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As a new legal assistant, when I was first called into the attorney&#8217;s office to &#8220;take a letter&#8221;, <\/strong>(back in the days when shorthand was how things were done), I was scared to death that I wouldn&#8217;t be able to keep up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a newly licensed real estate agent, when I signed my first listing agreement<\/strong> back in the days of my real estate career, I was fearful that all the things that could go wrong, would go wrong and somehow I would be to blame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When I got my first buyer and wrote my first contract<\/strong> for the sale of a home, although I had practiced in the classroom, I was dealing with this person&#8217;s biggest asset and boy was I fearful that I would do something wrong and it would hurt them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When I was asked to do trainings for foster parents and social workers<\/strong> about how to make lifebooks for kids in care, I was fearful that I would be perceived as the amateur with no college degree teaching those who did have the degree. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>When I was asked to host a company call <\/strong>for one of my <a href=\"https:\/\/empowernetwork.com\/courses\/team-building-formula\/\">network marketing<\/a> companies, I felt the blood and life drain from my face as they were announcing my name. \u00a0I thought I was going to faint. \u00a0I literally had to put a damp cool washcloth on my face which I had next to me because I knew I&#8217;d need it. \u00a0I was so afraid of saying the wrong thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When I was asked to be a coach<\/strong>I was afraid to let people down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When I first hosted my own webinars,<\/strong> I was fearful of many things&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>1) \u00a0nobody to back me up of I really stumbled on my words.<br \/>\n2) \u00a0what if the microphone didn&#8217;t work?<br \/>\n3) \u00a0what if people couldn&#8217;t see my screen?<br \/>\n4) \u00a0what if someone asked me a question I didn&#8217;t know the answer to?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"marker\">I mean to tell you, I was a basket case!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>When I was first asked to speak on stage<\/strong> at an event and share my story, I was fearful about&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>1) \u00a0Who wants to hear a middle aged, overweight woman?<br \/>\n2) \u00a0Who cares about my story?<br \/>\n3) \u00a0What if I forgot my own story because I was nervous!?<br \/>\n4) \u00a0What if I ran over&#8230; or too short.. time wise?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>But I said yes anyway&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span>&#8220;ANYWAY&#8221; being the key word here<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s what I do when I have feelings of fear.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1) \u00a0Recognize how I&#8217;m feeling. <\/strong>\u00a0Acknowledge it. \u00a0I say &#8220;Ok, I feel you but I&#8217;m not going to allow you to hold me back, the show will go on.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) \u00a0Find feelings of being grateful for the opportunity<\/strong> to go through the experience. \u00a0Most often when I do this, I get more excited about what I&#8217;m doing. \u00a0It&#8217;s magical.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) \u00a0Understand that whatever I&#8217;m fearful of, is my imagination.<\/strong> \u00a0The things that I am worried about are made up in my mind, stories I&#8217;m believing about myself that aren&#8217;t true and turn the focus off of me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) \u00a0Focus on how I can serve others. <\/strong>\u00a0Whatever I&#8217;m doing is not about me. \u00a0It&#8217;s about those who are listening. \u00a0How can I inspire them, help the with a breakthrough, with ideas, with solutions, and give them hope. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This ALWAYS puts me at ease and a great level of comfort! \u00a0This is really my super, duper, number 1 thing I focus on. \u00a0And boy does it work to settle those butterflies down! \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>5) \u00a0I recognize during these times of fear that I&#8217;m growing and the more I grow, <\/strong>the more I stretch and get out of my comfort zone, the more I can serve others which in turn elevates my income.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6) \u00a0I also remind myself that whatever fear I&#8217;m experiencing, I&#8217;d rather go through this than work a job<\/strong>, work for a boss, be slave to the 9-5. \u00a0That&#8217;s not an option. \u00a0So I gladly go through whatever I have to go through so I never have to punch a clock!<\/p>\n<p>I hope hearing how I hand fearful situations helps you put your own fears in perspective. \u00a0Try these ways of assessing and thinking and see how it feels. \u00a0I bet you&#8217;ll be surprised at how you end up feeling. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re awesome!
