The discovery of a man\u2019s body Sunday in the stable area of Churchill Downs was being investigated as a homicide, but there appears to be no connection to the race track or the Kentucky Derby<\/strong>, police said.<\/p>\n \u201cAt this point we don\u2019t have anything pointing to the fact that this had any association with Churchill Downs or the Derby itself,\u201d said Alicia Smiley, spokeswoman for Louisville Metro Police. \u201cWe are still investigating at the stables and at the barn.\u201d She said they are trying to determine the man\u2019s identity and how it happened.<\/p>\n Smiley said the death is being investigated as a homicide.<\/p>\n \u201cHe did sustain injuries that lead us to believe he was involved in some type of altercation,\u201d Smiley said.<\/p>\n \u201cOur investigation is ongoing as to why he would have specifically been at this location.\u201d -Alicia Smiley, spokeswoman for Louisville Metro Police<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Churchill Downs security called police at 4:50 a.m. EDT, Smiley said. The body was found at the back of a barn occupied by Louisville trainer Angel Montano Sr.<\/p>\n Montano did not have a horse running Saturday either in the undercard or the Derby, which saw a record attendance of more than 165,000. A telephone call, text and Twitter message left for Montano were not immediately returned.<\/p>\n About 200 people live at Churchill Downs at any given time \u2014 either in dormitories on the edge of the property or in small apartments above some of the barns themselves.<\/p>\n Although Montano\u2019s barn is just four away \u2014 about 150 yards \u2014 from where this year\u2019s Derby winner I\u2019ll Have Another is kept, there was little talk of the incident in the stable area.<\/p>\n Instead, I\u2019ll Have Another\u2019s trainer and owners were participating in the usual post-Derby media interviews and speculating about the next race in racing\u2019s Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, in three weeks.<\/p>\n The body was removed by stretcher from the barn at 9:50 a.m., and police were seen packing about a dozen large paper bags into the back of a crime scene unit van. Smiley said an autopsy was tentatively scheduled for Monday.<\/p>\n About a week after last year\u2019s Kentucky Derby<\/em>, jockey Michael Baze\u2019s body was found in a vehicle near the stables at the famed Louisville track.
