It’s so abandoned that it feels like a ghost town. When people are not that committed to their business or dedicated enough to set aside time to do things properly, it will end up showing somewhere; and the social media sites can sometimes fall in the cracks.

When I first starting working online as a web marketer, I was not aware of how important having a social media presence really is. Social media marketing is one of the most effective strategies that can be done with little to no expenses. It is super important to manage all of your social media marketing channels so that your audience does not end up in a “Detour.” It’s one thing if you have reserved a username and the profile is “parked,” but when there is an entire website down and you have not taken care of it for days or weeks then you are creating disasters. I highly recommend having a clear image with text put up so that your audience will be well-informed about the situation and they can come back at another time. Keep branding, themes, and color schemes all in line as well (Stay tuned for more about branding in the “Inconsistent Branding” section further in the series). If all people can see about you is something you posted from 2 years ago, then you are not sending the right message.

SOLUTION ~ Review All Your Social Media Accounts

Take some time out to review all of your social media accounts and online profiles. This way you can make sure you have not forgot about any and you can avoid more hassles. You can update your images, bios, about you sections, branding, and posts where needed. A great tool you can use to search for any online profiles you may have is at . You can check for available user names, too!

PROBLEM – Over Auto-Mation

It is fine to have your posts on a schedule, but when you are hitting up all of them at the same time with the exact same content… well, it basically says that you just want to get your social media marketing done in one simple step and move on. Each social media platform has a unique language. For example, Twitter has an entirely different style of posts than Facebook.

Subscribe and gain access to thousands of marketing resources! Don’t worry … It’s FREE!

SOLUTION ~ Schedule Valuable Content

There are several great websites you can use such as Hootsuite, TweetDeck, or SocialOomph to schedule your content on several websites. It’s OK if your content is posted over multiple platforms as long as you stagger the posts. Facebook now has a built-in scheduler that makes it even easier to set up content ahead of time and see exactly what the post will look before hand.

PROBLEM – Social Media Junkie

There are many Facebook pages that post every hour, but Facebook works better as a casual posting site, whereas Twitter is more for hourly updates. You should pay attention to this and you will start to notice in your newsfeed there will be companies or a specific brand posting too often. This can make your fans hide content from your pages, so be careful. On Twitter there are live events being tweeted and talked about so it’s not necessarily for the casual reader. Planning your posts on the correct social media platforms will really help your social media presence.

SOLUTION ~ Find The Sweet Spot

Your posting times and frequency will depend on what your research will show from your experience in Social Media. I can tell you that I used to post every hour all day long on several sites, but it was just too much. I have learned that each and every post matters with social media marketing. You’ll find that sweet spot with practice. Social Media is best broken down to post about 1-4 times per day on Facebook and put in more time with Twitter about 1 post every hour.

After a while you’ll start getting responses from friends, followers, and fans and then you can make any necessary adjustments. Knowing your insights and other metrics can be another great source of valuable feedback.
