I began to feel uncomfortable with the whole deal.

I could tell that “pushing pain points” and making people feel that my product would magically fix their life was not being helpful to the world.

I knew I had a great product, but the way it was being presented felt off.

I didn’t know what to do.

I used to find myself turning on my video camera to record an ad and feeling unable to even speak any words.

As someone who’s whole purpose was about helping others find the most powerful version of themselves and share their light with the world, I suddenly began to feel that my marketing was doing the opposite. Making them feel bad, making them feel dependent on me and my products.

It was hard to face.

And then I stumbled upon a video from a marketer I respect sharing that he too was feeling that how our industry markets is just OFF.

We all want to be a force for good, but so much of our marketing training is on manipulating others into thinking our products will ease their pain.

I got excited as he talked, and I realized that this man felt the exact same way I did.

That being a marketer was not working.

But for the first time ever…. I realized it could be different.

I could be proud of being a marketer.

Because it’s not that marketers are bad, it’s that they are the ones shaping the stories and messages people hear in the world. Marketing spreads more messages about how to be, who to be, and how to live our lives than any other medium.

We are hit daily by more marketing than entertainment.

So with that level of influence being a marketer can be a powerful and amazing thing.

What if we as marketers took that influence and learned how to make people feel powerful? How to make people realize they DON’T need any product or service or thing to be their best selves? What if we helped people realize that they are enough, that they can do and be and have anything they want?

What if they realized that the secret ingredient is not a product or service, but a hidden place inside themselves?

What if we could help people realize that they already have the power?

We could be an enormous source of joy, empowerment, and fulfillment in the world.

This was just a possibility. I really didnt’ know how to achieve it.

And then I read Winning the Story Wars: Why Those Who Tell (and Live) the Best Stories Will Rule the Future by Jonah Sachs.

And I knew.

It’s so simple.

Instead of the brand being the hero swooping in to rescue the poor suffering customer…. what if they customer was the hero, and the brand and products simply their tools for attacking their personal journey?

Winning the Story Wars broke down the various aspects of the hero’s journey story and helps brands discover a more powerful way to tell their story.

Sachs shared a history of marketing and the problems that have been created by marketing.

He shared how disempowering most forms of marketing are.

I felt like he was simply shedding light on WHY marketing can feel so off.

But the most powerful part of this book was his explanation of how to do empowering marketing. How to craft your story in a way that will help your customer.

Truthfully, it’s not an easy path. It takes work and effort, especially if you have been training in inflicting pain on your potential customers and emotionally manipulating them into buying your stuff.

The details in the book on how to create a new brand hero, how to chose your story and help others takes work. It won’t give you all the answers, but it will help you understand how humans respond to stories and how to chose the one that most fits your brand, your product, and you!

You can expect to have your eyes opened and your work cut out for you.

But it will be a journey that allows you to not only feel that you are contributing GOOD stories to the world, and genuinely helping others. It will help you take PRIDE in your marketing. It will help you see that you have chosen a noble profession.

Reading this book was hard for me, it was a journey in itself.

I saw some of the mistakes I’d made, and had to face the overhaul of how I market and what I do….

But it was empowering.

For the first time ever I am proud to say….

I am a marketer. I am a force for good.

If you market ANYTHING, buy this book.

One very proud marketer,

Niamh 🙂

Share this post and help spread the love!

Marketers wield enormous power!
