Where does it go?

Everyone is online these days and blogging for business, particularly small business, makes sense.

A business blog allows you to establish your expertise and credibility, become a resource, create a dialogue, and otherwise connect with your clientele on a level that may not otherwise be possible offline.

Everybody seems to be blogging now and all of this makes sense to you on a basic level so you jump in and get started.

You create a few posts, hit the publish button and……

….now what? You immediately start to wonder:

Who sees my blog? When I hit ‘publish’ where did it go?

These are very common questions that we are asked by new bloggers. Particularly those who are blogging for business purposes.

Where does my blog go when I publish it?

Why, the world wide web of course!

The instant you hit publish, you created something called a URL – Uniform Resource Locator. This is the address of your blog and that specific blog post and looks something like this:

 http://www.yourdomain.com/your-blog-post-title

By publishing your blog, you have blown it out into the blogosphere where anyone and everyone who has access to the internet can find it. Which leads us to…

Who sees my blog?

By publishing your blog on the web, you have enabled millions and millions and millions of people to read your blog.

Congratulations! That’s one heck of a relatively inexpensive and valuable way to reach a lot of people!

There is a caveat, but it is easily overcome!

You might have a thousand people a day visit your blog, but if it’s not something that they’re interested in, it doesn’t even matter because they won’t be buying what your selling.

Rather than asking :

Who sees my blog?

You need to ask yourself:

Who do I want to see my blog?

A blog is a form of advertising, in the same way that good customer service is advertising.

If people appreciate what they get from you, they’ll keep coming back and they’ll spread the word.

The key is to identify your demographic or niche and get your blog posts out in front of them in a very direct way.

Your blogs will still be visible to everyone but rather than relying on the diluted masses of people on the web; we can bring the target down to a very specific group of people for more immediate and meaningful engagement with your audience.

For example: if you own a butcher shop, you certainly don’t want to waste your time trying to sell your best tenderloin to someone who wouldn’t touch it with a 30 foot pole!

Over the next few weeks, we will be covering various methods for identifying your demographic / niche and getting your blog posts out in front of the right group of people.

But in the beginning, and before you move into more advanced methods, there are 2 major, key aspects to blogging to focus on:

Consistency & Value

Your readers need to know that they can count on you to consistently provide them with valuable information that they can put to good use. Like clock work.

These are two things that you can and must do for your readers right from the start as you learn more advanced methods of getting your blogs out in front of the right people.

In the meantime, if you are a member of Empower Network and have upgraded to Inner Circle, we recommend listening to David Wood and Tom McMurrain called Don’t Sell Beef To Vegetarians. This audio is geared toward identifying your demographic/niche and is a wealth of information.
