I remember when I used to sit up with my Mom; after the news we tune into Johnny Carson and \u201cThe Tonight Show. He was the king of late night TV<\/strong> with his relaxed yet\u00a0irreverent\u00a0humour and a parade of celebrities or interesting guests. \u00a0There was never a competition for the Tonight Show<\/em> \u2013 Johnny ruled.<\/p>\n But Reynolds was a pal and a frequent guest watch below:<\/p>\n Everybody presumed \u201cLate Night\u201d host David Letterman would move up to the earlier time slot, including Letterman himself.<\/p>\n Instead, NBC tapped Leno, whose genial, bland form of humor put off many critics.<\/p>\n I don\u2019t watch Leno but every once in a while, I catch the Jaywalks, which I do think are funny:<\/p>\n In the aftermath, Letterman left NBC to create his own \u201cLate Show\u201d<\/strong> on CBS.<\/p>\n The two hosts, once friendly colleagues, have rarely spoken since. They briefly reunited for a 2010 Super Bowl commercial with Oprah Winfrey, but Letterman continues to make digs about Leno to this day.<\/p>\n In 2004, Leno made the surprising announcement that in five years, Conan O\u2019Brien (who\u2019d taken over \u201cLate Night\u201d from Letterman), would succeed him as host. As he explained, they wanted to avoid the controversy<\/strong> that took place with Leno\u2019s appointment.<\/p>\n But as the date approached, \u00a0it was clear that Leno \u2014 still at the top of the ratings \u2014 didn\u2019t want to leave.<\/p>\n NBC was nervous that he might jump to another network, so they gave him a daily 10 PM primetime<\/strong> comedy show. \u201cThe Jay Leno Show\u201d which bombed with critics and audiences.<\/p>\n But O\u2019Brien\u2019s \u201cTonight Show\u201d never really took off and NBC executives began to consider moving<\/em> Leno\u2019s show to 11:35, and\u00a0\u201cThe Tonight Show\u201d after midnight <\/strong>for the first time in its history.<\/p>\n O\u2019Brien released an excoriating statement (which went viral) saying he would not host a \u201cTonight Show\u201d at 12:05, as it would \u201cseriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting.\u201d<\/p>\n NBC paid him off (huge amounts of money) to leave the show, then reinstalled Leno as host.<\/p>\n O\u2019Brien, now with a groundswell of support, embarked on a comedy tour, then created his own late-night program on TBS.<\/p>\n Now the competition for the Tonight Show<\/strong>\u00a0is heating back up again with reports of NBC\u2019s newest succession plan.<\/p>\n Jimmy Fallon whose \u201dLate Night\u201d is a \u201cmuch more mainstream show\u201d than O\u2019Brien\u2019s version, is now pegged for the late night prime time spot. \u00a0[Related: Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon: A Comedy Love Story]<\/p>\n \u201cJimmy\u2019s show translates very well to 11:30 \u2026 so I think if the ratings slip a little bit, but they see strong numbers in 18-49, they\u2019ll let Fallon be in second place for a little while to Letterman,\u201d Keller explains.<\/p>\n \u201cSenior television executives\u201d\u00a0have told the New York Times that a deal is all but finalized that will giveThe Tonight Show<\/em>\u00a0to Jimmy Fallon by fall of 2014\u00a0at the latest.<\/p>\n With the deal, the classic late night talk show will move back to New York City where it hasn\u2019t been taped since 1972 when Johnny Carson brought the show to Burbank, CA.<\/p>\n Which leaves Jay Leno left out in the cold \u2014 a place he\u2019s more than familiar with.<\/p>\n Competition for prime time TV is rough!<\/p>\n Life in the Entertainment business is brutal!<\/p>\n Competition For The Tonight Show The Good Old Days, I remember when I used to sit up with my Mom; after the news we tune into Johnny Carson and \u201cThe Tonight Show.
