Did you know you have a fraction of a second to grab a prospects attention? One of the most powerful tools you have at your finger tips is to make sure you create a headline that grabs attention. Not only does a headline have to sell but it also has to be compelling. Below are a few tips to help you accomplish this task.
Strong Headlines Can Tap into Your Readers Emotions
According to psychologists peoples buying decisions are based first and foremost on our emotions. Make sure to use headlines which offer your readers a strong emotional benefit or reaction.
I will go over just some of the possible emotions that people can experience and feel while reading your headline:
1. safe
2. proud
4. attractive
5. confident
6. wealthy
7. respected
Use Active Language in Your Headlines
To compel- it’s important to use active language. Use language that shows movement and commands attention.
For example, “Lose five pounds in five days by following these simple steps,” is a fine headline however it doesn’t command action nor does the headline tap into any emotions. However,”You can conquer your weight loss goals by following these simple steps.” Conquer is an active and emotionally powerful word. This word conquer commands action. Readers receive the benefit of feeling powerful and in control.
Use the Word YOU-Let Your Readers Know They Are Important
The word YOU is a powerful word. It lets the reader feel as if you are talking to them specifically and interested in solving their problems, issues and help them achieve their desires. Use the word YOU in your headlines instead of the words I, Me, or We in your headlines. Using the headline examples above compare the two options:
“Lose five pounds in five days by following these simple steps”
“You can conquer your weight loss goals by following these simple steps.”
People want to know what’s in it for them and when they can asses that information in the headline, they are going to be compelled to continue reading your copy and possibly make a purchase.
Here are three more ideas for powerful headlines:
Ask a question- Do you want to ensure your financial future?
Make a promise-Make 1k a day
Make it newsworthy-New program guarantees you will earn 1k a day.
Three Simple Steps to Write Headlines That Sell
Now you should have some ideas about what types of headlines sell, how do you begin to write those powerful compelling headlines?
Step One-Get to know your audience intimately. What are their hopes, dreams, desires and problems? Understanding your audience will help you create an emotional and powerful headline directed specifically at your audience.
Step Two-Determine how your products or services are going to make your prospects lives better or even possibly solve a problem or two. For example if you sell Yoga DVD’s or Yoga equipment and your audience struggles with feeling self connected then you can create a headline that highlights a specific benefit your DVDs offer to solve that problem.
Step Three-Write ten to twenty, yes twenty possible headlines. Not only will this give you practice writing compelling headlines, it will help you hone in on that perfect headline. If you think you have a few winners you can always test them for conversion rates to find out which headline is more effective.
Copywriting and marketing experts consider your headline to be the most important element of any effective marketing piece. Take the time to craft a compelling, and selling headline and you will reap the benefits for years to come.
