Digital Photography and 3D art. Where these two fields combine is that in 3D renders (the computer calculation of a 3d \u2018scene\u2019 to achieve a single image from a \u2018camera\u2019 in the scene) the point of view chosen for the render acts in the same way as a real camera.<\/p>\n<p>Any camera has the ability to adjust the amount of light coming in by varying the size of the \u2018hole\u2019 in the iris, just like our own eyes, if the scene is bright the hole is small and if the scene is in subdued light the hole is bigger. This has a double effect on the image in fact.<\/p>\n<p>With a small hole the exposure must be lengthend compared to a larger hole. In a camera the f numbers are a relative way of measuring the aperture size. A <strong>higher<\/strong> number means a <strong>smaller<\/strong> hole. The higher f numbers produce an increasing \u201cdepth of field\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Depth of field<\/h2>\n<p>The depth of field is the distance within the scene that is within acceptable focus. Too close to the camera is fuzzy and too far is also blurred. We have a <strong>zone<\/strong> in front of and behind the <span>focal distance <\/span>\u00a0(the distance from the camera that our subject is situated on which we have focused the camera) that is larger with a higher f number and smaller with a smaller f number.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some images that help explain this.<\/p>\n<p>Above : the camera is focused at about one meter and as you can see the effect of the depth of field at f 3.5 puts \u00a0everything that is nearer and further away out of focus. The distant (200 meters or more) is just a blur.<\/p>\n<p>Above : Here we are still set at f 3.5 BUT the camera is focused at the middle distance of around 200 meters which makes the effect of the depth of field much less apparent. We have the foreground and the distant trees in acceptable focus. If we had used a higer f number the clarity could have been increased further but the exposure time would have to be augmented to compensate.<\/p>\n<p>Try it out for yourself. Take the same scene without adjusting the focus distance with a low, medium and high f numbers. e.g. f 1.8 then f 8 then \u00a0f 22 . If your camera is set to \u2018A\u2019 i.e. Aperture priority, the exposure time will \u00a0be compensated automatically.
