I wish my high school guidance counselor had known about the Myers Briggs personality test<\/strong><\/u>.<\/p>\n Oh well, I guess I shouldn’t cry over spilled milk, huh?<\/p>\n If you’re anything like me, you don’t even remember if you did or didn’t\u00a0visit your guidance counselor while in high school. And even if you did…<\/p>\n Just like me, you don’t remember anything worthwhile coming out of the visit.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n When I look back on it in retrospect, it was a major oversight for that process to not be more useful than it was. To transition out of high school, into the adult world, with no guidance…<\/p>\n …or direction had to be the biggest snafu in the history of snafus.<\/p>\n (Hey, I’ve always wanted to use the word snafu in a sentence, shoot me.)<\/p>\n I can only speak for myself, but I know I’m not alone in this….<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n I had no clue what I really wanted to do with my life as I entered the adult world. I graduated high school with an academic honors diploma, but wasn’t smart enough to do a very important thing….<\/strong><\/p>\n Sit down, analyze what life path would be most fulfilling to me, and then devise a plan to live that very life I’d just envisioned.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n Instead, I did what a lot of us do<\/u><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Decide to go to college but chose a major solely based on how much money I’d make after getting that degree.<\/p>\n Listened to what other people thought I should do.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n Figured out later that I’d made a mistake in selecting my life path and decided to change my major.<\/p>\n Only to make the same dumb ass mistake again.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n What mistake you ask<\/u>?\u00a0<\/p>\n I never once really sat down and thought about what made ME happy. What I liked to do. What activities I really enjoyed. What natural gifts I had that I wanted to use on a daily basis<\/strong><\/u>.<\/p>\n Maybe I was too young to know any better. Maybe I could have used some guidance from a family member or mentor to steer me down a fulfilling path.<\/p>\n Maybe I didn’t even know the answers to those questions.<\/p>\n So, of course, because I didn’t ask myself those questions I was moving along in life in an aimless way. I thought I was doing all of the right things…<\/p>\n But something just didn’t feel right<\/u>.<\/p>\n I felt something pulling at me inside signaling that I was capable of more. That I was on the wrong road. That I wasn’t meant to do the things I was doing at the time.<\/p>\n So, finally I naturally began to do more self-reflection.\u00a0<\/p>\n My mid life crisis had come very early.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n As I was perusing the Internet one day as I do often, I came across this site. The site was offering a free version of a test based on this thing called the Myers Briggs personality test<\/strong><\/u>.<\/p>\n (There is also an official Myers Briggs administered paid version available here.)<\/p>\n Because I was on mission for information, and it was free, I thought what the hell. I took the test and I was given some random four letter code as my results. Armed with that four letter code, I began to dig more into what it meant.<\/p>\n My research led me to find information on the origin of the test, what the different letters represented and how the 16 possible four-letter codes differed from each other.<\/p>\n I ultimately stumbled across this book that, to this day, has been the most informative resource I’ve used in regards to the Myers Briggs personality test<\/strong><\/u>.<\/p>\n This book, using the Myers Briggs personality test<\/strong><\/u> as its scientific foundation, focuses first on helping you understand your strengths, your weaknesses and on developing a solid base of self-understanding.<\/p>\n It also helps you to understand others and how to better interact with them, whether it be a personal relationship or a professional one.\u00a0<\/p>\n Lastly, but not least, you’re able to take your newfound understanding and pinpoint career or entrepreneurial\u00a0paths that are in alignment with the real you.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n Going through this discovery process myself began a turnaround that changed my life tremendously. Discovering myself allowed me to establish a compass that keeps me pointed in the direction of fulfillment.<\/p>\n Not only did I learn more about what I DID want to do, I learned more about what I did NOT want to do. I now understood why I had been naturally attracted to certain things and turned off by others.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n I didn’t feel crazy any more. I’d always held some ideals and beliefs that were unconventional and I struggled with the notion of not being “normal”.<\/p>\n I now knew that I indeed was not normal.
