Did you know that public speaking is the # 1 fear in North America? The second greatest fear is death! If you have the fear of public speaking, you are not alone. You must first recognize what \u201cfear\u201d is. Fear is the anticipation of pain. Is your fear real or imagined?<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jerry Seinfeld has his famous bit about public speaking, where he spouts that people fear public speaking more than death, which means that most people would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

But public speaking doesn\u2019t have to inspire such terror.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

In the following video, Steven D. Cohen, instructor for the Extension School course Oral Communication in the Workplace, offers three tips to help you quell your fears.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Here are the three strategies Cohen suggests in the above video to help you overcome your fear of public speaking:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Visualize yourself succeeding. See yourself going through every step of the speech, from the walk to the stage to the applause at the end.<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Relax! The \u201ct-repeater,\u201d a breathing exercise to relieve your nerves before speaking, and easing into eye contact can help you stay calm in front of a crowd.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Practice in specific ways. You don\u2019t want to memorize the entire speech, but instead focus more on the introduction and conclusion of your presentation.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Becoming comfortable speaking publicly can have numerous benefits, whether they be professional or personal. Who knows, after some practice you may even come to enjoy your time in front of an audience!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

So the next time you feel the jitters of public speaking overtaking you, remind yourself that the human body is designed to help us cope with this stress, despite our trembling legs and dry mouths.<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
