Well barn swallows<\/span> struck my eye for two reasons.\u00a0 One is that the photo is reminiscent of a staff of music.\u00a0 Would any of you musicians out there try to play this please and report on how it sounds?\u00a0 It seems like it would have to be an instrument that can play chords or at least two tones simultaneously.<\/p>\n In the martial art style that I am studying (Sokken Go Kai Do Ryu) we have a kata called Wansu.\u00a0 The translation that we are given for it is Barn Swallow.\u00a0 Now I\u2019m sure that it is not named for barn swallows<\/em> who are static perching on a wire.\u00a0 However, it seems to me as though people long ago had a more lyrical and evocative way of looking at the world.\u00a0 Maybe just in the naming of things.\u00a0 I can\u2019t say that watching people perform this kata\u00a0 I am minded of barn swallows, either static or<\/em> active.\u00a0 Maybe I\u2019m too literal.\u00a0 I would not have thought of myself that way and can even give examples.\u00a0 That there are some movements in the kata that might be interpreted as evoking a bird is undeniable.\u00a0 Sufficient to identify the entire kata by that name, I\u2019m less sure.<\/p>\n Am I missing some aspect of this bird that informs the movements contained in the kata?<\/p>\n It is very likely that I and, dare I say, others may be missing something.\u00a0 Having opened this can of worms, the question is begged:\u00a0 What other kata named for specific things might have deeper significance?<\/p>\n I may not be the best person to puzzle this out.\u00a0 The absence or presence of my too literal mind notwithstanding, my kata tradition is entirely in a different direction.\u00a0 But perhaps that is a discussion for another time.<\/p>\n What is your take on the barn swallows conundrum?\u00a0 Are you a martial artist?\u00a0 From what system?\u00a0 What is your take on kata (or forms)?<\/p>\n What did you musicians find out?<\/p>\n Still awaiting suggestions for threads from you my gentle readers.<\/p>\n What do barn swallows<\/strong> mean to you?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Bing\u00ae had a photo of Barn Swallows as background on Sunday 11\/4.
