\u201cChampions Evolve from Competing<\/em> to Creating<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0Today so much importance is placed on competition and growing up as an athlete I personally have discovered the value and enjoyment of the \u201ccompetitive edge.\u201d\u00a0 I recall the whiffle ball games with my older brother where we would play for hours.\u00a0 He was always the New York Yankees and I would take on the identity of the New York Giants. I am dating myself. It was such a sweet feeling even at 8 or 9 years old to throw a hanging curve ball and strike him out in the bottom of the 9th to win the world series.\u00a0 He usually ended up kicking my butt because he was four years older.\u00a0 Hours in the winter on the basketball court on our driveway would also have the same competitive edge to it.\u00a0 My dad had rigged a spot light from the top of the garage so that we could play well after sun down, and play we did. We would be out there in the subzero weather playing horse or embodying the final seconds of the 7th game between the Knicks and the Celtics.\u00a0 Again I was always the New York opponent. \u00a0I did not mind because I loved to emulate the bank shot that was one of Sam Jone\u2019s favorites.\u00a0 \u201cTwo, and in your face bro.\u201d\u00a0 God that felt good. I was also fortunate to have an older sister who seemed to carry that same fierceness for competition because she also pushed me to the edge as well.\u00a0 She still does today after all these years together.\u00a0 Our brother has passed on but as I recall those memories of earlier days with my older brother and sister I realize how fortunate we were to have each other to not only compete with but to also hone our edge<\/strong> together.<\/p>\n

Those where diffidently the beginnings for me of developing the \u201ccompetitive edge\u201d.\u00a0 My older brother and sister were such great mentors and role models for me.\u00a0 They seemed to be\u00a0born leaders and any born leader does not come through without that \u201cedge\u201d.<\/p>\n

What I have discovered since those younger years is that the competitive edge<\/em><\/strong> is inborn as well as developmental.\u00a0 It\u2019s both.\u00a0\u00a0 Every man (and woman), is hard wired to compete.\u00a0 Yes that\u2019s right compete.\u00a0 We are born to compete in the sense that we are born with an internal drive to \u201ctranscend, to evolve, to succeed and yes even to create.\u201d\u00a0 Robert Moore, a trans-personal Jungian psychotherapist uses the metaphor of a Warriors Sword<\/strong> to describe this innate aggression we each have as part of our inner code for development.\u00a0 Our inner sword is rightly there to foster our advancement and improvement in Life.\u00a0 The purpose of this internal drive to compete<\/strong> is ultimately to lift ourselves up to a higher standard of living, of succeeding and eventually of contributing beyond ourselves.<\/p>\n

The inner drive to compete and get stronger physically, psychologically and even spiritually is to build our-self up first, to fully accept who we are , to embrace our own internal strengths and gifts rather than \u201cknock\u201d someone else down.\u00a0 This is the true value contained in sports and athletics.\u00a0 It builds the character to succeed in life as well as it helps develop and sharpen that inner edge, (sword), so necessary to stay in the game<\/em><\/strong> today.<\/p>\n

Today with all the crisis we face both personally and collectively without this aspect of our selves clearly in place one will get\u00a0pushed around and eventually defeated by the challenges life is bringing on a day to day basis.\u00a0 Life has her own competitive edge as well.\u00a0 At times it can appear to be sharp, harsh, and even cruel.\u00a0 However in this contest we call living, Life\u2019s edge is there to test us each day.\u00a0 Our challenge is to show up and match her creative tension, to push back with authority and even transcend the perception that we are competing with Her.<\/p>\n

The invitation that life and today\u2019s challenges bring is to shift out identify from competition to creation, to embrace a new reality\u00a0 \u00a0The competition between two teams creates the \u201ccontest\u2019 and it is the contest that draws forth the Victory. I personally would much rather see a hard fought contest between two opponents than a \u201cblow out\u201d.\u00a0 If you feel you are getting blown over during these changing times then I suggest you go within and find your competitive edge, your Warrior.\u00a0 Also, once you have picked up your sword realize that these tools we developed in our younger days through competition are the same strengths needed today for healing, change and re-creation. What I see is that the world we have created is in need of change and re-creation.\u00a0 Without a creative edge on our part this will never happen.\u00a0 Life is bringing her best and finest from day to day.\u00a0 I guess the question is; How will you answer this challenge? How will I? How will we?<\/p>\n

Donald Trump says it well here,<\/p>\n

\u201cCreative people rarely need to be motivated-they have their own inner drive <\/em><\/strong>that refuses to be bored or defeated.\u00a0 They refuse to be complacent.\u00a0 They live on<\/strong> the edge, <\/strong>which is precisely <\/strong>what is needed to be successful and remain successful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, Keep it sharp!<\/p>\n
