Facebook Just Changed Your Email Without Asking\u2014Here\u2019s How to Fix It (Updated)<\/h2>\n

Hey, here\u2019s something really stupid and annoying: Facebook abruptly switched everyone\u2019s default email address<\/span> to the @facebook.com account you\u2019ve never used. Here\u2019s how to switch back Facebook\u2019s obnoxious overreach right now. So people can actually, you know, contact you.<\/p>\n

Remember long, long ago, when Facebook launched a Facebook email system and then nobody used it? That\u2019s fine\u2014it was always just an option you were more than welcome to completely ignore. And we did, because we already had Gmail<\/strong> and work inboxes, and didn\u2019t need yet another. If our friends wanted to email us, they could just head to our profiles and have options.<\/p>\n

Not today! If you go to your profile (or anyone else\u2019s), you\u2019ll see the @facebook.com email account listed\u2014which just forwards to your Facebook messages inbox<\/span>\u2014and none of your others. They\u2019ve all been hidden in a ham-handed attempt to make the Facebook inbox relevant.<\/p>\n

\"Facebook<\/a>Luckily, it\u2019s easy to reverse this foolish move. Go to your Timeline. Click About, under your contact info. Scroll down to \u201cContact Info\u201d and hit edit. Switch all of the crossed out circle symbols to a full circle for each inbox you want visible on your profile. If you don\u2019t want @facebook.com to show up, switch it from a full circle (\u201cShown on Timeline\u201d) to crossed out (\u201cHidden from Timeline\u201d). This is also a good opportunity to check your privacy settings and make sure your various inboxes are visible only to friendlies. Hit Save.<\/p>\n

As we announced back in April, we\u2019ve been updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site.<\/p>\n

In addition to everyone receiving an address, we\u2019re also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines.<\/p>\n

Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we\u2019re extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Facebook, it\u2019s probably safe to say that\u00a0the way we all had our things before<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>was the \u201cchoice\u201d we made about \u201cwhich addresses\u2026show on [our] timelines.\u201d This wasn\u2019t about choice\u2014in fact, it was the opposite. You chose for us.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> \u00a0It took me a long time to figure this out and have my \u201creal\u201dGmail email address show on my About as it was\u00a0before. \u00a0It is on your Timeline, not your profile. \u00a0I even had difficulty locating where \u00a0to edit my About section. \u00a0Follow the directions above to do it today.<\/p>\n
