There are lots of different designs that can be added to your curtains here is a button tab top that you can apply to spruce up your design. You Can choose unlined or lined tab top curtains follow the instructions for lined tab top curtains \u00a0and unlined tab top curtains .<\/p>\n

This style of tab top curtains have one end of the tabs stitched into the top seam of the curtain with the other end shaped into a point and buttoned on the right side. Buttons can be covered in a contrasting colour or fabric to enhance the tabbed heading.<\/p>\n

You will need<\/strong><\/p>\n

Decorative curtain pole.<\/span><\/p>\n

Suitable curtain fabric, washable for kitchens and bathrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Matching, or coordinating fabric for the tabs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lining Fabric.<\/span><\/p>\n

Buttons for covering.<\/span><\/p>\n

Measuring & Estimating\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fit the decorative pole above the window unless you already have one fitted.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Measure the decorative pole between the finials and multiply by the fullness ratio, at least 1.5. Divide this figure by the width of the fabric to be used and round up to the next whole number. This is the number of widths of fabric required.<\/p>\n

Example<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Pole length = 120\u201d . 2 fullness ratio = 240\u201d \u00f7 54\u201d fabric width = 4.4 widths round up to the next whole number = 5 widths will be required. 2.5 widths in each curtain panel<\/p>\n

2. Measure the finished length required. See the section relating to this <\/p>\n

3. To calculate the cut length, add 7\u2033 (18 cms) to the finished length for hem allowances. Measure from the top of the pole to the length required. If patterned fabric is used, extra will be needed for pattern matching (learn how to on page 249).<\/p>\n

4. To calculate the amount of fabric required for the curtains, multiply the number of widths by the cut length.<\/p>\n

Example<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Finished length will be 70\u201d + 8\u201d hems = 78\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

78\u201dx 5 = 10.88 yards.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do the same in metric but do not mix them.<\/b><\/p>\n

5. Estimate for the tabs, decide on the number of tabs required for each curtain, I will use 14 for each curtain total 28, and the width of 4\u201d = 1\u201d for seam allowance =5\u201d, divide this number by the width of your fabric.<\/p>\n

Now calculate the cut length for the tabs, 10\u201d then double it 20\u201d now add 4\u201d for the seam allowances total 24\u201d. multiply the number of widths by the cut length.<\/p>\n

Making Button tab tops curtains<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Cut the required number of pieces of fabric for the tabs, each measuring 5\u2033 (12.5 cms) wide.<\/p>\n

Cut the length, twice the finished length plus 5\u2033 (12.5 cms).<\/p>\n

Example:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

If the required finished length of the tabs is 4\u2033 (10cms), the tabs need to be cut 13\u2033 (33cms) long.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Seam allowance 2\u2033 (5 cms)\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Twice the length 4\u201d (10cms) = 8\u201d (20cms) 4\u201d (10cms) for hanging.<\/b><\/p>\n

Plus 5\u201d (12.5cms)<\/b><\/p>\n

Total 13\u201d (33cms)<\/b><\/p>\n

Fold each piece of fabric in half width ways, right sides together, pin and stitch 0.5\u2033 (12mm) in from the raw edge. Press the seam open in the centre of one side.<\/p>\n

Lay the tab on a flat surface with the seam side uppermost, measure 1\u2033 (2.5 cms) along the fold from the raw edge at one end and mark.<\/p>\n

Stitch from this mark to just inside the raw edge at the centre seam. Repeat for the other side to form a point and trim the corners.<\/p>\n

Turn right side out and press.<\/p>\n

Making the Linings for the Tab Top Curtains<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

1. Cut the fabric to the required size for each curtain. If more than 1 width is required, join widths together with a flat seam making sure to add any half widths at the outside edges, press seam allowance open.<\/p>\n

2. Cut the lining 4\u201d (10 cms) narrower and 3\u201d (7.5 cms) shorter than the fabric. If more than 1 width is required, join widths together with a flat seam making sure to add any half widths at the outside edges, press seam allowance open<\/p>\n

3. Turn up a double 2\u201d (5 cms) hem at the bottom edge of the lining press and stitch close to the fold.<\/p>\n

Making the lined tab top curtains<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

1. Turn up a double 3\u201d (7.5 cms) hem at the bottom edge of the fabric press and pin. If more than 1 width is required join widths together with a 0.5\u201d (12 mm) flat seam (learn how to do this here), matching the pattern on the fabric where necessary and adding any half widths to the outside edge of each curtain.<\/p>\n

2. Lay the fabric on a flat surface, right side up, and lay the lining on top, wrong side up, so that the top folds of the hems are aligned, the curtain fabric needs to be 1\u201d (2.5 cms) longer than the linings. Cut off any excess lining at the top hem.<\/p>\n

3. Pin the side edges together matching the raw edges. Stitch down each side edge, 0.5\u201d (12mm) in from the raw edges. Stitch down the length of the lining but do not stitch through the hem allowance on the fabric.<\/p>\n

Finishing off the lined tab top curtains<\/span><\/h3>\n

1. Turn right side out, turning 1\u201d (2.5 cms) of fabric to the wrong side at each side edge. Press flat.<\/p>\n

2. Slipstitch the hem in place and mitre the corners ad penny weights at this point\u00a0<\/p>\n

3. Lay the curtain on a flat surface, lining side up. Turn in 1\u201d (2.5 cms) of fabric and lining along the top edge and press.<\/p>\n

4. Slip 2\u201d (5 cms) of each tab in between the fabric and lining like a sandwich at the top edge. Space them at approximately 8\u201d (20 cms) intervals with the seamed side down so when folded over you will not see the seams and pin in place.<\/p>\n

5. There must be a tab at each end space the tabs out evenly across the width and at right angles to the top of the curtain.<\/p>\n

6. Check that the length of the curtain is the correct length including the tabs when folded over machine stitch along the top edge securing the tabs.<\/p>\n

7. Fold the tabs over to the right side and pin the points, 4\u201d (10cms) down from the top edge of the curtain.<\/p>\n

8. Position the pointed ends to the right side of the curtain and stitch a covered button (learn how to on page 237) 1\u201d (2.5 cms) up from the point of the tab. Attach the button sewing through all thicknesses of the curtains securing the tabs.<\/p>\n

Voil\u00e0 beautiful buttoned lined tab top curtains.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Repeat for the other curtain, making sure to add any half widths to the opposite edge. Thread the pole through the tabs and hang the curtains, adjusting the folds as required, and dress the curtains, go here to find out how to dress and hang the curtains.<\/p>\n
