Our out of the ordinary trek began at 2pm today as we entered the Egyptian Theatre<\/span><\/strong> in Boise, ID<\/strong> for an afternoon of Musical Movies \u2013 a Boise Philharmonic Orchestra<\/span><\/strong><\/a> production in tandem with silent film accompanist Ben Model<\/span><\/strong><\/a> \u2013 a regular featured artist at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Library of Congress.\u00a0 In all, we were treated to five different features- it was a great time for this film lover with the added bonus of the incredibly nostalgic feel of the Egyptian.\"Enter<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always loved the unique feel of the Egyptian Theatre.\u00a0 It was a very appropriate place to see \u201cIndiana Jones and the Last Crusade\u201d in 1989 and this was the perfect venue for viewing these historical films.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always thought it very cool that Jimmy Stewart<\/span><\/a><\/strong> frequently played the theatre organ at this location while he was stationed in Boise during WWII.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first three shorts were accompanied by the Boise Philharmonic orchestra members.\u00a0 They were:<\/span><\/p>\n

-Felix (the Cat) in \u201cPedigreedy<\/a>\u201d (1927)<\/span><\/p>\n

– Charlie Chaplin\u2019s \u201cThe Adventurer<\/a>\u201d (1917)<\/span><\/p>\n

– Buster Keaton\u2019s \u201cOne Week<\/a>\u201d (1920)<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of the these three films, both \u201cPedigreedy\u201d and \u201cOne Week\u201d were scored by Ben Model and this was the world premiere of the Felix the Cat score.\u00a0 I thoroughly enjoyed all three of these short features and the orchestra, conducted by Yorgos Kouritas did an outstanding job.\u00a0 It was actually really neat to sit and imagine oneself sitting in the seats 85 years ago and enjoying some of these same films.<\/span><\/p>\n

Egyptian revival architecture in America<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After a brief intermission and a change of setup as the orchestra left and the portion of the stage where the organ resides was uncovered and prepared for Mr. Model, I grabbed a few pictures with my almost adequate phone camera.\u00a0 The quality isn\u2019t the best in some of these and I apologize- left the Hasselblad in the glove compartment.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the organ was prepared, it was noted that the pipes for the organ reside in the vertical patterned wall pieces behind each of the seated golden figures found on either side of the stage- this provided the 1927 stereophonic effect.<\/span><\/p>\n

The last two features were accompanied by Ben Model on the Egyptian\u2019s pipe organ.\u00a0 They were:<\/span><\/p>\n

–Roscoe \u201cFatty\u201d Arbuckle \u2013 \u201cFatty\u2019s Plucky Pup<\/a>\u201d (1915)<\/span><\/p>\n


\n-Harry Langdon\u2019s \u201cFiddlesticks<\/a>\u201d (1927)<\/span><\/p>\n

If I had to pick a least favorite out of the group, it would have been Arbuckle\u2019s film.\u00a0 That would only be because I didn\u2019t care for his character from the get go.\u00a0 Needless to say I enjoyed them all and enjoyed hearing Model play and\u00a0 speak briefly about his work.\u00a0 I can see where the style is a lot like jazz as it feels very improvisational.\u00a0 He was very good and his talent was unquestionable. <\/span><\/p>\n
