The thing is, I\u2019ve actually done this myself.\u00a0 Perhaps this is why I was so envious.\u00a0 A friend\u2019s dad is what we in Queensland-Australia call a \u2018grotty yachtie\u2019.\u00a0 He lives permanently on a boat in a local marina.\u00a0 One day a few years ago, my friend asked me if I wanted to go with them on a cruise around the Whitsundays, in Queensland-Australia.\u00a0 Is the pope a catholic?<\/em>\u00a0 I thought. \u2018Sure,\u2019 I said.\u00a0 \u2018I haven\u2019t got anything else on, so why not?\u2019\u00a0 And so, I was lucky enough to spend two glorious weeks island-hopping amongst 74 snippets of paradise (there are 74 Whitsunday islands in total).<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s really nothing like sailing.\u00a0 The wind in your hair, silence but for the sound of the boat slicing through the water (and sometimes, depending on how many rums my friend\u2019s dad had had, the sound of ACDC blaring from the on-board speakers).\u00a0 The smells of sea salt and sunscreen.\u00a0 The mornings were spent sailing to some new destination, based on what the winds were doing.\u00a0 By mid-morning, we\u2019d be anchored somewhere and, after a quick picnic on the deck in the sun, we\u2019d spend the afternoons swimming in the crystal-clear waters.\u00a0 We\u2019d go snorkelling, trying our best tofind nemo<\/em> (we found him!), or just spend hours sitting on the deck and chatting, enjoy the day.\u00a0 At night, we\u2019d enjoy a few bevvies over sunset, and my friend would get out his guitar and we\u2019d sing a few tunes.\u00a0 We\u2019d then bunker down for some shut-eye before doing it all again the next day.\u00a0 It really was heaven on earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The thing is, this experience is not just for the rich, or people who have friends whose father\u2019s happen to have yachts.\u00a0 Down in the Whitsundays, in Queensland-Australia, you can actually hire a yacht to skipper yourself.\u00a0 It\u2019s called a Bareboat Charter.\u00a0 You can roam around until your heart\u2019s content.\u00a0 Sounds expensive, right?\u00a0 Wrong.\u00a0 Provided you get a few friends together, you might find that this experience is really very affordable.\u00a0 No more than a night\u2019s accommodation at a modest hotel.\u00a0 Take your own food and supplies and it becomes borderline cheap!\u00a0 Sounds wonderful, doesn\u2019t it?<\/span><\/p>\n

Admittedly, my friend\u2019s yacht is not in top knick.\u00a0 It looks a little rusty and a little well-used.\u00a0 Nonetheless, seeing those photos sparked something inside me.\u00a0 I\u2019ve added \u2018Do a Bareboat Charter\u2019 to my to-do-list.\u00a0 Just before doing the washing and cleaning the house, in fact.<\/span><\/p>\n
