{"id":20,"date":"2012-05-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/empowernetwork.com\/adampayne\/?p=20"},"modified":"2026-07-31T19:59:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T19:59:48","slug":"fish-may-lower-alzheimers-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/empowernetwork.com\/adampayne\/fish-may-lower-alzheimers-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Fish may lower Alzheimer\u2019s risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Fish \u2018may lower Alzheimer\u2019s risk\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Eating fish and other foods containing omega-3\u00a0fatty acids\u00a0may lower the risk of \u201cAlzheimer\u2019s disease\u201d, new research has suggested.<\/p>\n<p>The oily compounds, which combat inflammation, appear to lowerblood levels\u00a0of a protein linked to <em>Alzheimer\u2019s<\/em>, scientists have found.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in the United States studied 1,219 people over the age of 65 who were free of dementia. Participants were asked questions about their diet, and had their blood tested for beta-amyloid. The protein clumps together in the brains of people with <strong>Alzheimer\u2019s<\/strong> and is one of the key hallmarks of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Blood beta-amyloid levels were found to lower with greater consumption of omega-3 fatty acid. A daily intake of one gram of omega-3 above the average amount consumed by the study participants was associated with a 20% to 30% reduction in beta-amyloid.<\/p>\n<h3>Fish \u2018may lower Alzheimer\u2019s risk\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Levels of the\u00a0protein in the blood\u00a0are believed to reflect those found in the brain, indicating a protective effect from consuming omega-3 rich foods.<\/p>\n<p>Lead researcher\u00a0Dr Nikolaos Scarmeas, from\u00a0Columbia University Medical Centre\u00a0in New York, said: \u201cWhile it\u2019s not easy to measure the level of beta-amyloid deposits in the brain in this type of study, it is relatively easy to measure the levels of beta-amyloid in the blood, which, to a certain degree, relates to the level in the brain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetermining through further research whether omega-3 fatty acids or other nutrients relate to spinal fluid or brain beta-amyloid levels, or levels of other <strong>Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/strong>-related proteins, can strengthen our confidence on beneficial effects of parts of our diet in preventing dementia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scientists, whose findings were reported in the journal Neurology, looked at 10 nutrients including saturated fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, mono-unsaturated fatty acid, vitamins E, C, B12 and D, folate and beta-carotene.<\/p>\n<p>Other nutrients besides omega-3 fatty acids were not associated with different blood levels of beta-amyloid. The link between omega-3 and blood beta-amyloid remained the same after adjusting for a range of potential influences, including possession of a version of the APOE known to increase <em>Alzheimer\u2019s<\/em> risk.<\/p>\n<p>Omega-3 fatty acids are mostly found in oily fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel.
